oh, well. tried to reboot and got a page of text with something at the top like "so you can fix the driver" or something. well, i certainly screwed up somewhere. only question is where? i'm loathe to write down that whole screen and post it here, but is that what i should do?? i did a stage3 x86 install with genkernel and basically all the "example" commands etc. except that i used kernel 2.6.11; and yes, i adjusted for that in grub. well, i would imagine it would be hard for you to help me without more info, but i never know. i didn't emerge any special programs at all or anything. another potential issue is that at the end i wasn't sure if i actually umount-ed what i was supposed to hehe. shall i copy that screen down? any things i should try?
system:
sempron 2200+ (rebadged athlonxp)
seagate 160gb ide hd
512mb kingston 3200ram
cheapest MSI socket A mobo (unsure of name) with onboard vid and sound
rosewill cdrw/dvd drive
onboard LAN with internet connection that worked right away without messing with it (cable)
well, that's about it |

You should post at least the last 5 lines, if not more.

The last few line would be a good place to start. Also, if you could post the messages just before the kernel started giving you errors, that would be useful in troubleshooting as well. My first suggestion, without knowing anything about the problem, would be to enable ACPI in the kernel menuconfig under Code: | Power Management Options ->
ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) ->
[*] ACPI Support | Then reinstall the kernel, add the option acpi=on at the end of the kernel line in your grub.conf, and reboot. See if that fixes the hangup. Alot of boot hangups can be fixed this way. However, not knowing anything about your problem, this is sortof a shot in the dark. _________________ "That question was less stupid; though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way."

I didn't think Genkernel made you do menuconfig...but anyrate.

What exactly does the machine do? Does it eventually make it to a command prompt, or does it though these debugging messages at you and die?
Also do you have debug or something like that in your USE flags? The kernel shouldn't be asking you to debug it unless you really want it to |

It doesn't "make you", however it is often useful. You can enter the menuconfig using the --menuconfig option, i.e. Code: | genkernel --menuconfig all
# or
genkernel --menuconfig kernel | Until I see some error messages though, I don't have a clear idea of what the problem or solution is here. _________________ "That question was less stupid; though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way."

Please give us some more info, we can't possibly figure out what the problem is.
try apic=off and acpi=off |
