Dear experts,

I would like to install a new Linux kernel on a Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000. That's a small pocket
computer

CPU: Intel XScale (PXA270 and 416MHz)
Memory: 16MB Flash and 64MB SDRAM, 4GB HDD.

I am entirely new to Gentoo (and to Kernel compilation) and I have come across Gentoo
because it seems you can do all sorts of optimisations in configuration.

(I am aware of an earlier port of Gentoo to earlier Zauri computers, but that project
seems somewhat discontinued now.)

Now, I don't know how to proceed - how can I determine
the necessary information - there seems a tool called genkernel
to determine the kernel compilation information - should I download
an .iso image on the harddrive of the Zaurus - can I then start that tool and how ?

Thank you very much for your help!

Best regards

Axel

Any support will have to come from the ARM corner: http://tuxmobil.org/pda_linux_xscale.html

No, genkernel is not a tool to obtain information - it is an automated kernel building tool that only works from within a working Gentoo installation.

You will probably have to create a pre-made installation to copy over to the system, because compiling on it may not work at all.

This can be done with crosscompiling to a chroot, but the system will have to be mostly static in nature, since adding to it will be... difficult.
Unless the system supports networking connections in Linux, so you could SSH into it.

Dear adaptr,

thank you for your reply.
I'll download a precompiled kernel, then.

Best regards,

Axel
