I doubt they'll suddenly become nitro lovers overnight just because you removed cflags. If people want to boost their egos by flaming nitro, ignore and/or fuck em.

I've been meaning to remove the cflags patch for a while since it does nothing but add the possibility of breaking the kernel. Never got around to it though. Merely coincidence that it happened now.

I agree with you. If they don't want to use nitro, fine. We aren't catering to them.

It's a quote relating a practice common in south east asia where owners of their low spec cars put flashy lights and rear spoilers and stickers on their cars to make them look faster, but in actual fact the only thing those cars are capable of is being "rice burners". The correlation with computer code is that people expect CFLAGS (and the like) modifications to make their computer suddenly much faster when these amount to micro-optimisations that are usually too small to be noticable to a human being. Unlike flashy spoilers in a car they cause harm by making code unstable. Worse yet, the CFLAGS modifications people add to the kernel are actually de-activated within the kernel code as the kernel hackers manually specify most of the CFLAGS that are safe in the code and disable some dangerous flags and most of the modifications are doing nothing.

Sorry Seppe, posting from the hip there :oops: I dont have a /dev/hda , I boot from hdc . I did not take the time to read and understand what you posted .

Still cant get nvidia-kernel to compile although that does not seem to be specific to this version only.

I will try to retro to 2.6.9-nitro1 . If that works , I'll post some specifics.

Thanks. 8)

[EDIT] Can now confirm that nvidia-kernel and -glx both compile fine on 2.6.9-nitro1 but not on this kernel (nor 2.6.11-nitro0)

I'm sorry, but what is "ricing"?? Only thing I could find was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricing, which has to do with customizing your car...

Yeah, it's comparing car ricers to OS ricers; using ridiculous customizations (i.e. cflags) in an attempt to get an extra 0.5% performance.

I'm quite surprised you haven't heard of ricing or http://funroll-loops.org before. It gets thrown about a lot at Gentoo users.

Have you seen "2Fast2Real" movie? If not, I suggest you to find it, I'm quite sure you will be impressed.
You all guys say that people should be free and stuff... So why can't I or someone else use 'ridiculous customizations' if I/he wants to do it? If you don't like some features, just don't enable them - that's all, so easy... And removing unique features from patchset just because a couple of [ mmm... let's say unkind guys ] don't like them is foolish, imho.
INDs: shame on you :?

Darckness: your new project... is it ricer-sources? hehe :)

it's gensplash (or fbsplash), not bootsplash. I haven't tested it myself, but it should work.

OK can we cut all the dumb ricer talk from this thread .

This is Seepe's support thread for the latest patch set which will soon be too long to read.

I you want to know more search for "ricer" on the forum and take it from there. You will find lots of threads to post to. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-181330-highlight-ricers.html

Thank you for your consideration and understanding :roll:

@Darckness
What version would you suggest ?

Code:
*  x11-base/xorg-x11 :
        [  I] 6.7.0-r3 (0)
        [M  ] 6.8.0-r3 (0)
        [M  ] 6.8.0-r4 (0)
        [M~ ] 6.8.0-r5 (0)
        [M~ ] 6.8.2 (0)
        [M~ ] 6.8.2-r1 (0)
bash-3.00#etcat -v nvidia-kernel
[ Results for search key           : nvidia-kernel ]
[ Candidate applications found : 5 ]

 Only printing found installed programs.

*  media-video/nvidia-kernel :
        [  I] 1.0.6111-r3 (0)
        [   ] 1.0.6629-r1 (0)
        [M~ ] 1.0.6629-r2 (0)
        [M~ ] 1.0.6629-r3 (0)
        [M~ ] 1.0.6629-r4 (0)
bash-3.00#

6111 is marked as I because I rebooted to 2.6.9 to test and it worked.

OK, forget the qu. For the record I unmasked nvidia-kernel ~x86 and 6629-r4 compiled .

Thanks. 8)

Me neither. It says:

It's working pretty well otherwise. Thanks guys.

Well 2.6.11-nitro1 is running well here. It seems to be a mild improvement on the last one I was running (2.6.10-nitro3) - I had an uptime of nearly 50 days and was quite reluctant to actually reboot, so I'm glad it works better.

about fbsplash ;)

Spock in changelog wrote:

A new version of splashutils is necessary in order to use
fbsplash-0.9.2. With splashutils older than 1.1.9, things *WILL*
break.

You have to install new version of splashutils, 0.9.1 is not up-to-date for latest version of fbsplash, must be 1.1.9 +

cheers :)

Thanks for the support. It looks like that splashutils is hard masked. So do this to unmask it:
Code:

echo ">=media-gfx/splashutils-1.1.9.1" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask

and emerge splashutils
I hope it will work then, I haven't tested it myself at the moment ..

Hello, I just downloaded 2.6.11.3 (33.6 dialup, it downloaded for ages). But nitro won't apply, it reports failed chunks.
How do I solve this?Will there be a new nitro that supports this kernel? Please help. I need my nitro :(
