Portage automatically removeing packages

I noticed after I unmerged and remerged libperl, a bunch of packages were unmerged automatically. I didnt think much of it until I noticed libpng was missing. I remerged it, and immediately after the merge portage tries to unmerge it! Why? How can I resolve this issue? Is there a portage log somwhere so I can see what packages were removed in the first place?

turn off AUTOCLEAN=yes in make.conf either with a # infront of it or no instead of yes , but are you sure it unmerging the one you just installed or a prior build , that is what is most likely happening.....autoclean is a petty nice feature
