Im running a RealTek RTL8139 on my machine given its connection details from DHCP. But i can only stay online for 3 or 4 minutes before i lose all connection with the network local and internet. I have no idea whats wrong but ive found this appears repeatedly in dmesg...

Probably the card. My advice: don't buy ANYTHING Realtek. It's cheap and crappy and unreliable. You can get a decent card for $15, so go out and buy yourself a 3com or Intel.

Try passing "noapic" to your kernel.
I'm not sure about the dmesg output, but this mimics a common problem.
