If you're using alsa, then amixer will let you do it.

where 0 <= newvol <= 100

I'm not using ALSA.
I compiled my sound drivers directly in the kernel
But thnx anyway!

Ah, okay. That howto will probably help.
I found this page which has a bunch of links to command line mixers. I've never used any of them, but some of them may work for you.

Ermixer seems to be pretty good to me.
I'm pretty sure it lets you mute... But AAAHHH!!! I can't check as I just noticed that for some reason my sound isn't working!! NOOO!!!! Must go fix!!!

Why don't you write an alias for aumix?
(to set your vol to 0% and back again) |
