Sorry that I didn't have the patience to read all posts. I just wanted to let you know that imo the version number for the current nitro-sources is invalid according to the Ebuild HOWTO and it might break some portage utilities. This issue had to be fixed in eix-0.2.1-r1 recently. It says:
Quote:
Initial releases normally have no revision number, e.g. package-4.5.3, and are considered by Portage to have a a revision number of zero. This means that counting goes as follows: 1.0 (initial version), 1.0-r1, 1.0-r2, etc.
In the gentoo.de overlay the nitro-sources-2.6.11-r0 have already been renamed to nitro-sources-2.6.11.
I hope you don't feel offended by this little complaint - I appreciate your work and have contentedly used the nitro sources occasionally.

Ah, that explains why the command:
equery list nitro-sources

didn't return anything 8O

I think we should wait for Darckness to recover, Tiger683 has worked a lot on this already.

1) posting with links

nitro 2.6.11-r4-nitro works -- more or less. There are issues in 2.6.11-r4-nitro for me, so -- off to 2.6.11-nitro
2.6.11-nitro-r0 dies on boot complaining about acpi. Start kernel with acpi=no parm, no PCI devices get configured -- i.e. no netowrking etc.

This is on a tyan board with amd-7611 irongate chipset. I notice that the patchset for ACPI appears to be a different version between the two. Anyone can point me to where there might be a changelog between the two ACPI versions I'd appreciate it.

a13x: I still have no idea why nvidia works for some and not for others. Supposedly rzZzn does, but he hasn't been around to share.

xororand: I'm aware of this, just as I have been for all -r0 releases. Since we aren't technically in portage anyway though, the point of -r0 is to tell people that this is a preliminary release. I only consider releases after -r1 to be "good".

Sebell: Try turning off ALL acpi stuff unless you absolutely need it. Then try.

Evil Dark Archon: Actually, we've been looking for an amd64 tester. Since you've been around for a while and know your way around the kernel a bit, we would be grateful if you would fill that position. PM me if you're interested.

Hey ppl, about nvidia, would someone, for who nvidia doesn't work, test these for nvidia issues?

1) (disable/)enable gart as module/builtin (there is some intel module ala i810 in drm preventing this from being modular!)
2) disable/ebable/modularize drm in kernel
3)disable/enable 1G Lowmem
4)disable stuff like win4lin/swsusp2
5)Get another nvidia card from a friend (thisone is optional, only if you'd like to hardcore contribute and have some spare time and a friend with OTHER nv card than yours)
6) test all three of my cflags suggestions posted in this thread
7)try removing ALL cflags that arent BOLD and/or beginning with -D (ie. -DBLABLABLAH )

thx.

So far, I have
- GForce II MX, Via Chipset
- lastest non-masked GCC (3.3.5?), fixed Makefile, -O2 in /etc/make.conf
- agpgart as module, 1GB Lowmem off, no win4lin/swsusp2

Both nvidia.ko from nitro and Gentoo ~X86 segfault, nitro 2.6.11-rc3 freezes Xorg at 100% CPU usage randomly, gentoo-sources 2.6.10 works without problems so far.

I can test the others in a few hours...

FF,

Daniel

What i can contribute atm (being in school right now):

- gcc 3.4.3 no offensice CFlags
- nVidia 6600 GT
- tested compiling with/without agpgart in the kernel, no success at all.
- win4lin/swsusp2 not enabled

Although this might not help darckness/tiger, in dark-sources I ripped out the nVidia compat patches and applied four patches to the nVidia module before building the module (by hand of corse). Ever since then it works perfectly and I haven't had any hardlocks. nVidia compat could cause problems with the nVidia driver being prepatched (with 2.6.11 compat patches). From what I know, nVidia compat is also no longer required to get nVidia working.

Hi,
i just want to give some feedback.
Im running x86_64 here, using 2.6.11-nitro0 non experimental with both non experimental 64bit patches applied.
I had exactly the same prob as rush_ad.
Disabeling "Power management options ---> [ ] Power Management support" solved the problem.
Also for some reason "Device Drivers --->Accelerated graphics drivers --->" wont open a "sub menu" so i keep using nvidia-kernel.

Greetings,

Hi,
just some more feedback:
It seems like the second patch isnt necessary.
i reversed / removed the second patch.
Code:

# patch -Rp1 -i ../64_bit_fix-non_e-untested-2.patch
patching file arch/x86_64/kernel/suspend.c

and since arch/x86_64/kernel/suspend.c seems not to be compiled with "Power management options ---> [ ] Power Management support" disabled the 2nd patch actually doesnt do anything here.
The error is reproducible here if "Power management options ---> [ ] Power Management support" is enabled in the kernel config.

greetings,
rc

Hi,

I have just moved up to 2.6.11

All seems well but nvidia-kernel is failing to emerge as a separte build.

I did not enable this in the kernel since this is not my main gx card at the moment.

Does IT prevent me building nvidia outside the kernel?

Thanks. 8)

Hey!

1)
The second patch is for ppl who want pm, the swsusp1 and dev-options are simply unfixably broken in nitro.

2)
No, the nvidia module in the kernel is just an easy way of doing it all in one step.
if you disable it in Kconfig, then your kernel acts as if there was no IT.

I have the same thing, and as far as I can tell have always had it. It is indeed quite irritating. I can't tell what causes it either -- I would've thought it's heavy IO judging by the disk LED which is always solid red in these cases, but otoh compiling with very niceness never triggers it, while with 0 niceness it sometimes does -- and niceness doesn't affect IO, only CPU load.
But it's not just CPU load by itself either, as I just tested via renicing F@H to 0. Invoking huge swappage (at the same time) didn't do it either. Renicing F@H to -10, however, did. Maybe it happens when one of those system processes with negative niceness has heavy activity?
(Off the top of my head, I most often encounter it 'in the wild' when running an app in gdb, and/or when loading huge backtraces.)

Yea, I've always had these issues with the staircase scheduler. I try the occasional *-sources with staircase every once in awhile to check. I never get any luck. Something about my system just does not like staircase. For example transferring data with USB 2.0 was going very slow and using high CPU usage. I was using a preivous release of nitro. As soon as I switched back to morph-sources (with staircase use flag off) everything was smooth and fast. BTW, I'm not trying to say morph is better and nitro is bad. Choice is good :P

For the record, I'm now trying 2.6.11-love1 with nicksched and it hasn't gone away. (Can't evaluate whether it's better or worse, but it's still there at any rate.)
open a project in kdevelop -> close it -> hangs -> gdb -p `pidof kdevelop` -> instant recipe for stuttering

@T ,

thanks for the clarification, dont know why it should stop compiling I've had the card for over a year. I'll have to back track a few kernel and compiler version to see when it broke.

BTW your sig should read "as if it were your own" , just thought you might like to know since it goes on every post you make.

Thanks again.
