| I am looking at getting a labtop, and wanting to put gentoo on it. I am wondering what you guys recommend for a labtop and want some feedback on this matter. I am looking at spending around $2,000. I can go either way with a pc or a powerbook. So i just want to hear what you guys think. |

It's really up to you which brand/model to go for, but you would be best served by simply doing your research before making your final decision. When you have something in mind, after you look up reviews and the like, do a search for linux <your model number> and see what sort of information you get back. If you see a bunch of problems with that particular model, or see nothing at all you may want to steer clear. If you get back a list of HOWTOs and other useful information, it probably means it plays well with Linux, and others are using it, which is a good sign.
You may think that this pretty much implies you should steer clear of bleeding edge, brand new laptops. This would be right, as (1) brand new laptop models tend to be very expensive, and (2) if no one is using a particular model of laptop in Linux, this probably means you'll only get support for a subset of the hardware therein. Nothing gets you moving to the preinstalled operating system faster than functionality you paid for that you cannot take advantage of. As well, it can be difficult properly identifying all of the hardware in a laptop. Unless you have a lot of time on your hands (and I'll assume you don't), you're better off using the fruits of someone else's labour. You could always contribute corrections/additions to whatever information you stumble upon as a show of gratitude.
Anyways, since I have only used Thinkpad laptops in Linux, I would tend to recommend them. I have personally run Linux on an X30, and this T40p, and except for a few annoyances, it ran (on the X30; currently runs on the T40p) pretty well.
Hope this helps, _________________ - chris |

| It is Laptop not Labtop. I also reccomend going with IBM if you can afford it. The T and X series are nice, I have a T41 with gentoo on it. |

I have 2 laptops around me with Gentoo.. My brother uses a Dell Inspiron 5150. Every piece of hardware works on that, including swsusp, the wireless card with ndiswrapper and the win modem using the slmodem package.. He loves it and seemed to have little problem installing (almost 1 year ago now)...
I have a 17" TiBook, I just picked up about 3 weeks ago, and that was almost as easy to get installed and working.. Although I spend more time in OS X in that machine at the moment...
One of the guys I work with has a Dell Inspiron XPS also, which I installed Gentoo on without a hitch.. _________________ All reality is the construct of the observer.

I for myself own an IBM T-41 and everything works fine. Don't know about the windmodem but I dont care about that one. |

I see your dilema. Contrary to popular belief, both machines have their benifits, but (if it's in your price range), I would go with the Thinkpad since you'll have the option of using the games you have with it right out of the box. It may be possible to play them on a Mac, but it could involve buying Mac-only versions to replace the ones you have.
But besides games, what do you plan on doing with this machine otherwise?
- Presentations?
- Software Development?
- School Work?
- Will this act as a Desktop Replacement?
- Office Work (Drafting Reports, or Working with Others' Documents)?
If it involves presentations, and other office type work, I would actually (duck first, then) recommend the Mac, which shines when it comes to accommodating to the environment its placed in. From your description, it seems like you're trying to avoid Windows as an operating system more than anything else. If this is the case, you should find the Linux-like MacOSX to your liking. You would still have the option of using Linux natively, but moving on...
If you plan on doing things on a more independant level, or only see yourself sharing source code, or simple word processing documents and the like, the Thinkpad looks just right. It's small and light(er than this T40p with it's huge battery), reliable, has great manufacturer support, and, most importantly is known to work well with Linux. In fact, there are plenty of T??, X??...well, <insert Thinkpad model here> Linux HOWTOs which range from detailed listings of hardware components to blow by blow, `how do you make featurex work' sorts of walkthroughs.
Again, if this is indeed your list, the choice is up to you. Both machines are well built, look decent, and have comparible performance. As well, I'm pretty sure you have the option of getting one of those `I accidentally threw my laptop into a vat of water' warrantees in either case.
Enjoy your choice, _________________ - chris |

I have a IBM R50 (hey, im a student, i cant afford much) that i have had for about a year. It supports just about all of the hardware that i have tested, most importantly the IPW2100 WiFi card. In my family, we have had a bunch of thinkpads, all of which are still running, including some from around 1996 or 1997 if my memory serves me. My brother has a T series, i think a T40, not running linux, but very nice.

After making my backpack 4 or 5 times heavier I nonchalantly walked off the bus and went home. | Heh...pirated laptops. Who knew.
But seriously, found == bought, right?

... no matter what you do, my advice is to keep completely in the dark on the laptop market for a few months. That way, you'll remain happy with your decision, either way. _________________ - chris |

| My only advice is don't buy a Mac. I have an iBook, and yesterday it broke for the 5'th time with the same problem. Apple keeps fixing it for free, but it is a major hassle. |

I havent heard labtop for years...I heard people actually pray on this and other typos on ebay to win auctions really cheap...
Get a Pentium M and dont get one with integrated graphics. Shoot high for the buffer on the HD too to avoid major bottle necks. My bro just bought an HP and its power consumption is awesome, the weight is nice and the power supply is a 3rd of his old Sony...nice screen resolution of 1440x which is pretty damn high for a 14" LCD... _________________ You're not afraid of the dark are you? |
