I have a mail server setup with courier-imap and postfix which works fine from my local machine, and works fine from machines on my local network if I set the IMAP server address to the internal LAN IP, but does not work if I use the external IP (which is forwarded to my server by my firewall)
I have a D-link router/firewall with 22,25,80,143,443 open
any ideas?

"does not work" is not very informative. What have you tried to do, what did you expect to happen, and what really did happen?
If you set the IMAP server to use an external IP address you will need to have an address in the same subnet on the LAN port of your firewall - but I'm not sure if that is what you mean.
I have courier-imap and postfix working here on a RFC1918 address LAN, and I can access the IMAP folders using Squirrelmail from the Internet: in other words, it can be done. A better description of your problem and we'll help you out!

sorry...I should have elaborated...
I have squirrelmail setup and it works great, even from the internet. I can use another computer on my network (in this case my wife's iBook) and setup a mail account in Mail for os x 10.2.3 that accesses the IMAP account by internal IP 192.168.0.2, but when I use the external IP or domain name it gets the error: can't establish connection with that IP on port 143...
I have made sure to have port 143 open on the firewall and routed to my server 192.168.0.2...I have check this by running nmap from my school's server to my domain...but I still can't get the mail client to access the server from outside the LAN

This is because of NAT, you need to access the server via the internal IP. When you use the external IP, NAT gets messed up in a nutshell. One thing I do is run an internal DNS server that reports the internal IPs to the internal boxes. |
