I am running a powerbook with kernel 2.6.10-r6. I currently have 2 gcc-profiles: powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu-3.3.3 and powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu-3.4.1. Using both profiles I am unable to compile the latest stable and unstable versions of gcc in portage: gcc-3.4.1-r3 (stable) and 3.4.3.20050110 (unstable). Each compile results in a segmentation fault at different parts of the compilation process. Using the 3.4.1 profile it goes on further to say it is an os or hardware problem. I find this difficult to believe as I have (currently) no known stability issues. I don't really know how to debug this problem or what kind of information is required for those more knowledgable than myself to debug the problem. I know that I am not running out of hard disk space and not out of memory during the compilation process.

as usual any help would be greatly appreciated

Having used gcc-config to move back to the pwoerpc-unknown-linux-gnu-3.4.1 I got the following errror:

Code:

Your gcc has a bug with GCC_SPECS
Please re-emerge gcc

I don't know what implications this has but like I said previously using either profile I can't successfully compile gcc without a seg fault

Wouldn't have thought of that. The only wierd thing is that it compiles most things fine. Just not important stuff like the kernel (reliably) and gcc. I have changed my .config and am going to recompile shortly. Will respond with results.

thanks

was the same back then with me... I just couldn't compile qt... I think it has something to do with the size of the package.

The GCC specs message has to do with a variable set in your environment. Type
Code:
unset GCC_SPECS
and 3.4.1 should work again. As for your other problem, if you had preempt on, that's almost definitely your problem. Let us know if it still occurs with preempt off.
