I have just been trying to figure out how much space is needed for a gentoo installation for desktop use. Without the /usr/portage/distfiles and /usr/local/games (where I have wine-games and NWN installed) I use about 10G including about 1G of music. Is that much? How much space do you guys use?
Yours

Code: | Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 16G 9.0G 6.4G 59% /
/dev/hda7 55G 52G 3.4G 94% /home
2.8G /usr/portage/distfiles/
28M /usr/games/
497M /usr/share/games/ |
So it's more than 5 GBs here. But it's because I have tons and tons of packages merged. What I like in Linux distributions is that it doesn't have any noticable speed impact. =) _________________ Knowledge is Power. |

The problem I found in budgetting space for gentoo, is that most of the time, you only need 4.5 gigs to get all the great apps and nice desktop environment. But when you're actually compiling say KDE or OpenOffice, you need an extra 2 gigs for the temporary files. So I guess my point is to make sure you leave some overhead for compiling. |

It's not that bad. I've compiled KDE on a system with a 3.2 GB hard disk. It took about two weeks, but it worked. =) _________________ Knowledge is Power. |

Code: | df -h [~]
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda7 133G 28G 105G 22% /
/dev/hdb1 38G 33M 38G 1% /storage
none 252M 0 252M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/hda1 20G 7.7G 13G 39% /Windows
/dev/hda5 38M 9.9M 27M 28% /boot

Now I am a bit bloated. But I would say I regularly use about 10 Gigs but I haven't cleaned out my distfiles and some other directories in a long time. |

My hardrive is not very important, but I really think that I have plenty of space. Gentoo is not really space consumming (I you clear /usr/portage/disfiles from times to times... )
I am using gnome and a lot of really cool applications...and I still have a lot of space...
Only conclusion : I have to emerge even more cool applications !!! |
