I'm doing my first install of Gentoo (I'm big on Arch and Ubuntu) Linux, and I've been blown away by the documentation! Not only is it thorough, but it's simple to understand (if read from the beginning). The writing style is succint (sp?) and invigorating (which is good b/c my 700mhz doesn't compile KDE too quickly).
I've seen some good FAQs and forums at Ubuntu, but it looks like Gentoo is far superior with community. Keep it up, and I look forward to seeing my first Gentoo desktop! Thanks again...

I've got to second that opinion. I've not found any better distro documentation anywhere, and the community has gotten me out of a bind several times. I've tried other distrobutions after Gentoo, but none match up.
Gentoo is the way for me to go. |

I've seen that Gentoo Developers are dedicated, professional and hard working. Thank you for the solutions you have provided during my almost three years of using Gentoo. Gentoo -- it just keeps getting better. |

i have been trying to install gentoo on my P4 medion laptop for a few months - its getting on now and i thought gentoo could revive it a bit.
i started with gentoo 2004.3 - didn't go too well, couldn't get as far as getting gnome working
then i gave up and got 2005.0 when it came out - i got gnome running nicely this time, but had loads of little things id messed up and my USB modem wasn't working.
then i installed 2005.1 and it rocks - iv got my kernel exactly how i want, iv got apm working, my speedtouch modem works (dont ever buy one!) everything is cool.
iv tried load of distros and i think gentoo is the best by far (better than freebsd aswell, even tho it shares some ideas)
my second fav. distro is slackware, but I can truley say gentoo runs faster and can be more logical (sorry Pat, im now converted; but slackware is still excellent!)
(ha ha, there is no comparison to mandrake, windows and redhat)
come to think of it, my old, worn and battered 2GHz laptop runs faster with gentoo on it, than a G5 with tiger on it - ha ha ha, but its true. (from opening windows and stuff - obviosly not as fast compiling)
big thanks to the gentoo team for giving new life to my laptop and teaching me alot aswell!
alain
(ps to all the people trying to dual boot windows + gentoo: dont bother, just get rid of windows!) |

well in defense of the osx schema, they do have tons of goofy eye candy stuff running all the time (ever try a simple 'top' on an osx machine, you'll see). once you toy with the items at startup and disable them (even things like the dock -- which i never liked) it gets prety damn fast.
I recently installed gentoo, again, but i used a 2004.3 cd, i just installed the base stuff then immedietly updated portage, and just like that i had an updated system before i even finishded installing some prety important stuff. once you get really familiar with the install, you start learning things you can do out of order, and then no matter what livecd, or snapshot you get, by the time your finished, you could have the most bleeding edge system(although i wouldnt recommend it) before you reboot for the first time (which in iitself isnt necessary either!). |

Yeah, i got mine working, but it's pretty annoying to get it to do what you want. Ethernet modems are way easier to use.

many thanks to the gentoo devs and maintainers and also to the many gentooers on the forums selflessly helping others out every day... both those groups are the strongest points of gentoo. |

But gentoo lacks something very important! An Api to portage. Please give me an api and appropriate bindings for at least C++, Java and ruby ... |

I am always so pleased and appreciative to see so many of the devs participating on the Gentoo Forums, and not only that but doing so in a lasting, consistent, and meaningful way. They have made countless posts that clarified issues or topics that I was having difficulty understanding. _________________ For every hammer there is a nail.

Getting my first taste of development gave me a fresh appreciation for what you guys do. Thanks for all your hard work, even when it meant enduring aggravating trouble-shooting sessions! _________________ Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't

Thanks again, Gentoo devs. For all your hard work, your patience with users, your quick and polite and helpful responses, and just for a sheer joy of being a Gentoo user and the chance to easily learn so much about GNU/Linux and Free software development in general. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

I also would like to say: THANKS!
Thanks to all developers and maintainers, who patiently sweep through the Bugzilla and resolve all the problems...
And thanks to Daniel Robbins, whose splendid idea stays in the form of Gentoo, even though he works at Microsoft at the moment. Hope you may turn this behemoth company into a nicer IT player one day... _________________ The geeks | Recommended Packages fOr Desktop & Server | Read BBCode Guide! |

Whenever I am forced to use another distro, I'm always thinking "dammit - this isn't gentoo!!".
Gentoo just makes sense - package management is quite amazing! _________________ Gentoo Currently installed on:

No matter what I type here, the words can never express how thankful I am of knowing that there are still people out there making their freedom highest priority.
Gentoo gives us the freedom to learn, while other distros tend to get more userfriendly but un-configurable, there's good to know that the heart and soul of the *NIX community still lives on, through Gentoo.
For freedom! |

Must add my thanks here. Gentoo is truly a liberating experience. It's everything that is good about linux, the freedom of choice, the control an customizability, the stability; yet it has none of the flaws I've experienced in other distros. Portage is beautiful, and makes me never want to touch anything but gentoo. Even OS X is losing some of its snazz in my eyes because it doesn't have portage.
When I'm using gentoo, I feel completely in control, the way I never have with any other distro or OS. Thank you so much developers and maintainers, for your CONSTANT work in making that feeling possible. I hope when I have gained more coding skills, I'll be able to give something back, because you guys deserve all of the help you can get.
Thanks! |

I'm going to have to thank all the devs too. Not to sound like a fan boy, but I posted this in another thread too. Gentoo has rekindled my love for computers. I always used to be into hardware, and hate software and programming. But a hardware hobby is expensive and gets old.
Now with gentoo I love my computer again! I love portage so much. Even though I had ever touched linux 2 months ago, I feel incredibly comfortable with it and haven't booted into windows on my desktop in a month. I installed it just in case I needed it for work or school, only to never need it. I'm planning to put gentoo onto my laptop soon too. |
