I know that a number of people are having problems, but I would like to take a moment to thank the entire Modular X Team. At least for me, things went very smoothly. And, on top of migrating to 7.0, I was finally able to get hardware accelerated rendering working!

Intel 915 GM on a HP Compaq tc4200 tablet. I just added i810 and i915 to VIDEO_CARDS, let emerge xorg-x11 do it's thing, enabled DRI and GLX in xorg.conf, setup the card to use the i810 driver in xorg.conf, and, voila, glxgears runs and at a decent framerate too.

I was also able to get XComposite working by enabling it in the Extensions section. Now Kompose works like a charm!

In the last year I have come from linux newbie to, well, linux newbie who knows the cli very well.

This week I have smoothly installed 7 brand new Gentoo production servers at work and comissioned a new main home machine, dual processor goodness. None of this would be possible without the Gentoo developer herds, or resorting to an inferior distro.

In addition to general thanks to the developers and manual writers I'd like to give special thanks to Paul Marks for maintaining the slimserver overlay ebuild so I have something to listen to while I work and the vmware team for the now RTM'ed vmware-server overlay ebuild so I can impress my bosses with great ROI.

I'm sick of seeing "Gentoo sucks", "what happened to gentoo" ... type threads, so here's here's my thoughts.

Hadn't sync'd in months - so I get the modular X upgrade, new Gnome, new ATI-drivers plus minor updates to damn near everything else.
All went swimmingly- just a few minor blocks to sort out. Only thing I had to skip was vlc because I was missing the unicode use flag. And I don't even use it; was put in to test.

All up, bloody good effort by the assorted devs (and testers of course).

Agreed. Things work well when you do the research and keep on top of it all.

I just wonder why certain things were changed around on us old school gentoo users who are used to performing a task one way and don't see any obvious need to depricate something that is working just fine as it stands.

Gentoo will _never_ meet the needs of everyone...or heck, even most everyone.

I also encountered no issues with the Xorg7 upgrade, and I even went so far as to test a new install using the 2006.0 LiveCD GUI Installer with the GRP/Dynamic options enabled, and only then upgrade the new X packages just to see what a new user might encounter if they went that route. No issues here.

However, I also accept that users do have problems which are significant and troublesome. Gentoo is in many ways like a mechanics lab, in that not everything that gets assembled will work due to the variety of parts and options being used. The best advice is generally to file bugs and ask questions on the available channels. This will sort out most issues. But there will be occasionally be circumstances that could drag on past where they should, and in those instances I can definitely understand that other distribution options might come into play. Yet at no time have I ever felt that Gentoo's stated philosophy was being placed in jeopardy. I believe in full that it lives up to that every day...albeit sometimes with sputters, coughs, and lurches into the deeper water.

Something I think alot of people don't see is that whenever you give the user control over their system, things WILL break. A good example is the CFLAGS. You can break your system with them, or you can speed it up.

Some people who use comps don't understand the base fact that the more control you have, the bigger the chance for problems. While the "I hate Gentoo" thread are annoying, they do serve a purpose: To give us an idea on what might need to be done to make the users life easier. Sometimes that is completly out of the question (using a package system like RPMs, for instance), or others it could be something like incorporating revdep-rebuild into emerge, and whatnot.

Developers, thank you!

Gentoo fills the gap between userfriendliness (eg. Ubuntu) and customizablity (eg. LFS), without compromising customizability! (You will always compromise userfriendliness when adding customizatation options)

It is the best meta-distribution I have ever used, and it is the better for me than any distribution I tried. Have been using it since 2002/2003-ish, never thought about changing.

Thank you! Kudos to the developers and the community.

Gentoo is great, I never have to look at the forums for solutions since there just aren't any problems with Gentoo even though I run it on 5 machines. Continue the great work :-)

The devs are doing a great job.Go on devs.
But they should discuss more factually, without personal attacks.
