Depends on how much usage the forum would see. Added a poll to gauge interest.

Time ago I started a thread in 'Other Languages' to see how many catalans are in this forum and if it will be feasible a catalan forum http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-218664.html. The trouble was (and is) that many catalans didn't visit this subforum, and logically, didn't visit this thread.

IMHO it would be very nice and helpful If we have catalan subforum to ask/answer/talk about Gentoo in our language.

Particularly I studied the possibility to translate Gentoo doc in catalan. I was read xml-guide, translators-howto etc and I'm ready to start when I have some time. The catalan forum will be helpful too to coordinate the translations if somebody helps me to translate.

I believe that 7 million catalans needs a little subforum ;)

Cheers!

EDIT: Arggg, I thought this was a catalan subforum petition  Well, I prefer a catalan forum translation too (and a subforum :P)

I don't asked the forum because i supose that this is more work for the admins and maybe for them this number is small ( i think we are up to 10 milionns :P) compared the others languages, or maybe isn't enough eforts from our side to put one up, but is heavy to determine how many people we are when we don't have a place to met ^^.

Anyway, i was asking for the interface in catalan due is already done and i suposed that no implied too much work to enable it.

Well, let's hope some day we have our small place on the site ;)

I agree. Even though that, if you want to write in catalan:

In any case, as pjp wrote above, international forums can be created if enough users request it and we think it will get enough traffic to warrant such a forum. There are no fixed numbers as to what constitute enough users/traffic.

Obviously we can speak Spanish, and we haven't problem if we must talk Spanish, but if Gentoo forums offers the possibility to talk with many languages why not Catalan and speak in our language?

When we speak Catalan in home, with family, friends, at school, work... if we have the possibility to talk about Gentoo in oficial forums in our language it would be fantastic.

Cheers!

The point is that the International Forums are not meant to reinforce regional/national identities, but only to allow for users that are not comfortable with other languages to have a place to post their issues.

I've been in Barcelona and didn't find a single Catalan that was not fluent in Spanish.

Fluent doesn't mean comfortable. I'm saying that i use catalan, not spanish in my quotidian life, it's a fact for more others.

But i don't think it's the matter here, the matter is that i want to speak/ask/answer themes about gentoo in my language with my linguistic comunity, maybe in a long future seeing your posture, so at least have the option of see the forum interface in my language.

Is not for "to reinforce regional/national identities", is for use my language, as so many users use their own language for cumunicate with other gentoo users.

Sorry, but i don't think i'm asking too much.

I don't want to pass a wrong impression, as I don't have any problem with creating a Catalan Forum nor provinding a Catalan translation for the forum interface. However, it means that somebody would have to work on it, and we are on a shortage of man-hours after ian! left the Site Admin group.

As you can use Spanish without problems (other than not liking it) and the number of guys wanting it is very reduced (only 14 until now), I don't think that this will become a priority in the short term.

IMHO talk about Gentoo with our language isn't reinforce nationalism. In fact for those who want there are nationalists forums around inet.

In the other hand I can understand the no creation of a Catalan Forum if we aren't a considerable group wanting this, like all languages.

Cheers!

In theory catalan is mainly a political language, that linguistically is rather close dialect to spanish. Even scandinavians use here a common forum even though difference between icelandic and swedish is much greater and active user base here wider than with catalanians, so I wouldn't have it a too much priority for separate catalan forum to be build up (of course it'll never hurt, if there are enough resources).

You don't know what you're saying, sincerely. Catalan is as similar to Spanish as to Italian or Portuguese, all are languages are derivates from latin. And... i want to know who defines a language as political... i don't know what are you trying to say with this.

If it's a matter manpower nothing can be done (at least from my side :( ).

I think the support of catalan would be a great idea because there is important movement in this language. Softcatala.org is a foundation that works very hard for translate great pieces of free software, like OpenOffice.org or Firefox.

It's true the catalan people can speak in spanish too, but for us is more comfortable speak in our native idiom.

According to mad93, catalan isn't a dialect, is another language like spanish, french or italian. BTW linguistically we are rather near to french too, but catalan isn't a french dialect.

Possibly s/have/wants

'Que n'aprenguin' is a phrase from Futbol Club Barcelona's president Joan Laporta (a soccer team). It is a joke.
