I had been using the cvs version of the emu10k1 driver (off of sourceforge.net), and it worked pretty well. Then I noticed it in portage, so I decided to try that. I could only get the front two speakers to work (I have a 5.1 set up), which really didn't bother me that much. Then I decided to use vanilla sources (2.4.20), mainly because Starcraft under winex runs extrememly slow under the Gentoo-sources. So, I unmerged and remerged emu10k1, and my sound totally stoped working. After trying a few things, I reverted back to the cvs version, and now my rear channel and center work again. So basically, I was wondering if anyone else had this problem before I file a bug report. I am not sure if it is the ebuild or my own set up. Thanks!

The Ebuild didn't work as expected for me either, but how did you get rear and center both working?

Take a look @ https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=18000 and the excellent work TenPin has done. Use it myself and it works a treat. If you ever re-compile the kernel and modules remember to recompile emu10k1 aswell.

bakgwailo:

perhaps you were editing the emu10k1.conf left over from cvs version, instead of the one in /etc that gentoo uses?
