Just for the hell of it, and because they made me use it for the first 2 weeks at work, I installed nitro on my debian 3.1 install.
Works perfect!
My 2 weeks are up, so I'm compiling gentoo now. Guess I should have started a few days ago.

After doing some reading it would appear that this problem first showed up in 2.6.9 within the ck patchset. This site seems to suggest it may be cfq:

Perhaps cfq does something funky with SMT. darckness, you would know this better than me: did cfq, SMT, or reiser4 change recently with reference to scheduling code?

Idon't know if Darckness put the cfq-ts in the regular nitro, but I've put it in rt-version
(though, noone here seems to use it.... hmh, nevermind.......)
try another io-scheduler until next version comes out.....

PS:
all hte nvidia ppl can already look forward to next nitro, it'll be sth. special...

cheers,

T

How can I change schedulers at the kernel line to "rt"? Currently I have "elevator=cfq"

u can't.
rt is not an io-scheduler.....
i propose u search on the lkml for "realtime-preempt" before asking further questions....
PS: to use the rt-version of nitro u must emerge nitro with USE="want-realtime", but i heard that nvidia ppl say that nvidia driver is broken with nitro-rt

Ebuild in rc3 does not have want-realtime functionality I don't believe...the USE flag is there but it doesn't look like it does anything :P

EDIT: Oh, nevermind, there is no rt patch for this version. I'll try previous.

UPDATE: The effect of enabling realtime on my kernel is much akin to putting a very large brick wall in front of a moving train.

Interesting thing is that I'm using cfq without a problem on 2.6.10-nitro2, but on 4 I have issues.

stabilty? JK
:D

I await patiently -- actually this post contradicts the patient part of the statement. Anyhow, I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these sources.

This latest release has been ok, except for the first time in many kernels I have been experiencing random lockups. This is the price to be paid for the latest and greatest.

Due keep in mind that these are based on experimental kernel releases (2.6.11-rc*) which can lead to somethings going wrong. Also, there have been MASSIVE changes in 2.6.11 which will effect some stuff, so be ready for stuff to break.

It would be nice to find a way to stop the nvidia drivers causing X to fail with "caught signal 11", and no other errors...

teamspeak bombs out on me. it seems to have been narrowed down to a certain patch in https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=270956&highlight=teamspeak+killed . Is that patch included in Nitro, and if so, is it necessary?

Without Teamspeak, I can't give this kernel purplerhinos Gaming Seal of Approval, a real coveted honor :)

John5788: You can do that through your BIOS; it's called overclocking.

milothurston: Try toggling your agpgart support in the kernel and using/not using that.

purplerhino: That patch was NEVER used in any nitro. Ever. We try not to steal patches from gentoo-dev-sources and, for the most part, succeed. Therefore I can only think it is caused by one of the new developments in the 2.6.11* series.

Everyone else: I just finished the masterpiece. It IS a single patch.
Code:
-rw-r--r--  1 darckness darckness 136414 Feb 11 16:34 ?????-???????.bz2

Doesn't seem like a big deal, does it? Only 134K. But! This patch WILL reduce certain types of posts in this thread by about 97%, and it will save you several extra keypresses. Not only that, but it will make everyone who isn't using nitro/developing nitro jealous.

Feel free to take your best guess, but remember that you probably won't get it because we are:

dang.. i was hoping it was that easy.

well supposedly it used to work with ck and nitro back when it broke on gentoo-dev... so I'll go back a few nitros and see if I can pinpoint where it breaks, and maybe compare to vanilla to see if the problems there.

[edit] same thing in vanilla 2.6.11-rc3, so not a nitro issue.

I'm getting excited about the new nitro suprise though!

Thanks - I've tried it with NvAGP=1 and 2, and both seem to do the same thing.
I'll try it on another machine to see if it works there.

for all the disbelievers: I AM actually using nvagp, not the kernel's built in AGP support on this kernel.

gzcat /proc/config.gz | grep -i agp (~)
# CONFIG_AGP is not set

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep -i nvagp (~)
Option "NvAGP" "1"

This is something which should be impossible under 2.6.11... Still, it does work.

You might actually have stumbled across the fix in one of your patches here... (or was it intentionally? :P)

P.S. Can't wait for the next realease (although this one is great already) :)

I am in need of a new keernel to compile. With your offer of a new nitro patch I am eager of compiling the current nitro.

So my question is: Is your masterpiece comming out tonight or tomorrow, or is for next week? I would really appreciate that you release soon so that I can get my hands dirty!!!!!!

Thanks.

I am often in search of words to express myself. Let me quote from the good book:

Homer: "That's bad."
Old man:"But it comes with your choice of toppings!"
Homer: "That's good!"
Old man:"The toppings contain potassium benzoate..."
Homer: "....."
Old man:"That's bad."
Homer: "Can I go now?"

Homer: : I understand. Let us celebrate our new arrangement with the adding of chocolate to milk.

Thats, the one...

As predatorfreak said, there is nothing in any of the logs about this. I know for a fact because I have temporarily suspended the uploading of logs until the next release. Wouldn't want anybody finding out what it is too early!

That being said, we've decided to wait until we've firmly marked the next release as stable before releasing it. We want this to be the best nitro EVER. Since we're so dedicated to this next release, it will most likely take a little while (especially since kernel patches/releases have been SLOOOOOOW lately). We haven't even started it yet (which isn't a problem since I can usually whip out a stable in ~20 minutes if I don't get distracted) because of a lack of further patches/fixes. I estimate that internal testing will take approximately one full day. Rest assured that I will give frequent (probably TOO frequent) progress updates as soon as we get started on it, because I am...

AN INSANE NITRO DEV WITH TOO MUCH FREE TIME ON HIS HANDS AND NOT ENOUGH KERNELS TO ABUSE!!!

Edit: Stop bugging me!! I won't give out the sekrit! Ever! If you want my precious, you'll have to get it out of predatorfreak. Check his sig for contact info if you're dedicated.
