My computer died, so I get to upgrade, and actually break the 1ghz barrier. :)

Anyway, I am considering the Athlon 64 2800+ and wanted advice from hopefully, AMD 64 owners.

1. What major linux apps can be compiled to take advantage of the 64 bit chip.

2. What complications come up that are unique to 64 bit linux

not processor related:
1. TV capture card that is linux compatible

There's an AMD64 forum here.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewforum.php?f=46

There's also this:

Compiles go fast. Heck, everything goes fast. I haven't had any real problems. Just follow the guides and don't use Reiser4.
My only complaint is that there's no 64-bit flash player. No more Homestarrunner.

Bah. Nobody forces you to go there. :D

A 64-bit linux system is a great way to find stupid web designers. You wouldn't believe how many sites use flash where images and text would work just fine. It makes some pages unusable.

Having bought an AMD64 3000+ with 512K of L2 cache, let me just say... find one of the 3200+ chips with the 1MB of L2 cache. It will well be worth the extra dough.

My neighbor bought the 3200+ (just like a 3000+, but with 1MB of cache) and an almost identical setup as mine. He has the same Shuttle Cube as I do, same version, same RAM (2x512MB Geil DDR400), same hard drive (WD special edition 80GB with 8MB cache) and a slightly older video card (he has Radeon 9600 Pro, I have 9700 Pro). His system gets better performance all around. He can compile the kernel faster, gets a better score in the HL2 stress test, etc.

I'm gonna be buying an AMD Athlon 64 system this summer. I plan to get at the very least as 3200+. If I really have money by then, I'll maybe get an AMD Athlon 64-FX chip for the wonderful overclocking I hear so much about.

The biggest gain you'll see in 64-bit is FPU, like with video processing or even gaming. The AMD64 will fly.

Also, to be able to use Flash, you'd have to do the following.

Code:
emerge firefox-bin
emerge netscape-flash

Then you'll be able to play Flash movies. Unfortunately, you HAVE to run it in 32-bit mode. For now.
