I was running NTP 4.2.0, which I had compiled from source with no problems. I decided to install the Emerge version so it would keep me up to date with any changes that might happen. But, I know get the following error in my log file:

Aug 25 15:26:39 apple ntpd[7833]: can't open /etc/ntp.drift.TEMP: Permission den
ied

How do I fix this problem?

Thanks,
Jeff

What are the permissions of that file? The default for ntpd on Gentoo is to run as the "ntp" user/group.

Yeasterday I emerged ntp and have same problem.
Code:
Feb  4 13:01:16 [ntpd] can't open /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift.TEMP: Permission denied

In /etc/groups and /etc/passwd ntp was added.
But:
Code:
root@radfoj radfoj # ls -l /var/lib/ntp/*
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 0 úno  4 01:12 /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift

It means I have to change permissions to ntp/ntp.
Why it couldnt be done automaticly by "emerge"?
