Hello Gentooers

I recently decided to move from windows to gentoo and use gentoo as primary os where it's possible.
The installation wasn't a big issue since i installed gentoo before for a few times but always fell back to windows and that was also primarily because i could not find suitable pendants to many windows programs. Some are obvious but some aren't at all.

My suggestion would be to make a list of very common windows software and list the equivalent linux tool(s) for it. That would make it easier for (ex-)windows-people to stick to linux. I know there are lots of these lists on the net but most are useless or not updatet at all. (And you come to a point where browsing portage and trying several different programs isn't a solution when time is short...)

I personally think that this would be a great support for all linux beginners and everyone who needs a free equivalent to a common windows soft.

What do you guys think?

I'm in and willing to help, but where to start??

Perhaps, we should focus on day-to-day apps first (like browsers, IM clients, e-mail clients, etc). As well it would be useful if this page was sorted by desktop...that is have the windows app, then the equivalent in Gnome, KDE, IceWm, standard X, etc. That way people can pick the app that best suits them (for example I shy away from GTK apps where there is a suitable KDE replacement).

As well, it might be useful to post this somewhere easy to find like on Gentoo-wiki.com, where it is generally a lot easier to find relevant info thatn in the forums.

I envision this list might get large, so perhaps making it queryable is a wise idea (so you can pick your windows app and find the equivalent in one of the other desktops and vice versa). If we can find a server that will host this, I am willing to put in some time coding PHP and/or setting up a DB backend (I am a professional DBA type/Java Programmer with PHP experience).

Well as I said:

I'm thinking of not just a plain text list. Something with recommendations, like if u used outlook with exchange -> evolution, etc., links to faqs, ...

Sorted by window-managers and categories would also be nice and of course it should be searchable like psychomunky said.

@psychomunky

Hosting shouldnt be a problem, i have a linux hosting account with unlimited space, so if u wanna do something just shout. php and mysql should be no problem althouth i'm totally n00b at it, i should succed to upload the files ;)

EDIT:

Just found this site, dunno if we really can beat this :(

Just bookmarked that link....pretty sweet and comprehensive.

I agree that site would be hard to beat...I'll hafta look at it a little closer, but a cross reference site would still be cool i think, esp if it is cross-referenced by windows application.

For me that site works well, but then again, I've been using linux for about 3 years now (almost exclusively as a desktop for about 6 months).

If anybody else thinks that a crossref site as suggested is still a good idea, then I am still wiling to help out.
