For those of you who have been getting a src_compile error and not being able to emerge applications (such as gkrellm), I was able to successfully do so. I had the problem before and I solved it by changing the USE command in my make.conf file. I made it very simple:

USE="-gtk -qt -gnome -kde X -alsa"

And this solved the problem! In otherwords, by making your USE command only what you need it to be to install the current app (perhaps by using EXPORT USE or something) you should be able to compile safely.

Hope this helps at least someone other then me.
