I think he talks about the installation docs.

Lol me to, the old doc's basically run net-setup, partition using fdisk, make filesystems and mount them, chroot into them, set some flags and run scripts done. the whole document was like 7 pages, I miss the old docs too, I've been with gentoo for a long time

I've been with gentoo a long time as well. I think the new handbook is leaps and bounds better than the old install doc. It now covers more aspects of a linux system (such as the great fstab examples) and architectures (the past docs gave only passing info about alternate architectures). Gives more explanation as to why the decisions you are making are important and gives great tips on optional tools you can install (such as logrotate). The handbook now includes post install info such as "Working with gentoo" and "Working with portage" which are essential reads for anyone who wants to use gentoo. Most importantly I think the split of networkless install into a seperate section was sorely needed. Not to mention all the different languages that the handbook is now available in.

In short, the handbook is a complete guide to the gentoo operating system now and not just a loose collection of How To's. Keep up the great work gentoo docs team!

Where is this new handbook you people are speaking of? The Handbook is still the same old installer doc I can now do in my sleep.

...that has a tendency to reshuffle overnight and is added to or significantly changed at least once a month.

Where have you been ?

About the only thing that hasn't changed in 2 years is the color scheme - which shouldn't, because it's good.

If you want a short installation reference, try the Gentoo x86 Quick Installation Reference. Okay, it may lag behind a bit on the real instructions, but then again, it's meant for people who have done enough installs by themselves :)

Yes, the handbook instructions are updated and changed regularly. We do that because we want to keep the translation teams busy

I hate to be a naysayer but I love the old install docs.

Maybe the short guy fits my needs. I've installed Gentoo a few times and use just about every other Linux distro at some point or another.

As we speak I am doing a Stage 1 install of Gentoo!

I decided to SSH from my Powerbook to do the install, that way I can have the new docs open and watch t.v.

Since it takes forever (especially with my system being older) I should be able to continue the install while I'm at work today..

KI

It's good to be back with gentoo!
