Your site says that I am not logged in when I try to view it. It's a shame though because there's no way I'm going to take the time to register and do email confirmation and security code blah just to see a picture of a beta installation script. |

no idea what you are talking about......
no need to login, the login is for me only to do maintenance (that is why there is no place to sign up)
and what are you trying to view anyways? the screenshots are right there on the page and so is the download link. _________________ www.trpn-online.com |

I just hope that not too many new users will rely on the installer, since you learn a lot about gentoo during the installation. |

Yah, me too...
Guys, remember one of the good things about gentoo is the fact that we know alot about the system?? This only comes through going through the hard install. In my opinion, this gives you oppriciation! _________________ Carry out the bigger will for your life.... |

I hope so too. I even say on the webpage that it is recommended to install the normal way.
But, after I installed it a few times I am not going to learn anything new. I just wanted something that is brain dead so i don't have to check the handbook for small little things to type in.
I also know that I could have done a script that will just flat out install my system without me touching anything, but I wanted something that my friends or other people could use as well. |

Recommendations
mirrorselect still doesn't seem to work (the code looks a bit different than from the manual)
ability to add a /home partition from the installer (missing from the list)
ability to use nano instead of vi
review fstab with vi or nano after it's created
edit/review make.conf (add USE flags and change cflags)
packageselect works fine now (not under vmware though)
all i can think of at the moment ... good job so far

Thanks AlchEmysT
I was using an older version of the install handbook so I think thats why mirrorselect didn't work.
I added /home and the ability to review fstab (but not edit it. you can still do it after the script has finished.)
Using vi is for another day as I am kinda busy at the moment. I am pretty sure you can edit your use flags and cflags if you do a stage1 but I will look into it for other stages. As for vmware I don't have it so I can't test it. Maybe sometime I will download the trial and test it out in that.

This looks really good!
I began a install today just to test your nice installer
Didn't have time to test a full install but I have some toughts:
1. If I'm not using framebuffer:
Code: | livecd root # ./diagi-0.3.2.sh
**********Your terminal is too small. Please adjust the size to at least 30 rows and 80 columns -- try "stty size"**********
livecd root # stty size
25 80 |
I edited /etc/rc.conf and set CONSOLEFONT="default8x9" and ran "/etc/init.d/consolefont/restart", but a normal user should not have to do this.
2. Something I would think could be a BIG advantage is if you could go though the installer and the last step where to accually do the install (and not do anything prior, except cfdisk).
NOTES:
I installed in Virtual PC 7 on Mac OS X. (shouldn't matter)
Keep up the good work _________________ http://www.lejban.se|http://www.koad.se |

I need a link to the installer so I can test it for you (your website is all kinds of screwy for me right now, but I know you're remodling it) |

Please PM me what is wrong with the website (what browser you are using, resolution etc etc) so i can fix it, if you don't mind... I have tested it in the 4 major engines (ghecko, IE, KHTML, Opera) but only 1 version of each (I don't have access to IE 5.5 or below for example, I only tested it in IE 6). It would be helpful if you could tell me the error...
Lejban... thanks for the input. I agree it would be a HUGE benefit to be able to answer all questions and sit back and watch it install after you have answered them... I will have to work on doing that. As for now I am waiting to see if anything has progressed for the official gentoo installer. If it is going to be out soon, then there is no point continuing this script. If there is no indication of progress for the 2005.0 then I will certainly look into doing that. |

Seems some part of your site is trying to go to 192.168.0.103.
Ah yes. there it is:
Code: | <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://192.168.0.103/tcms/theme/default/default.css" type="text/css" media="screen" /> |
Whoops
192.168.*.* is, as you should know, inside your own private network and will definitley not work for other people. |

Thank you...what a dumb mistake, I forgot to change the link when I uploaded it. |

You might have been doing work on it when I was checking it out, cause it works now. |

I will update the script to check if nano is installed and use that as the default and vi as a fallback. And also check out the stty size, I just have to make sure all dialog windows fit at 25x80 (which is the standard console size, correct?). On line 1387 it says $rows -lt 30... change 30 to 25 and it SHOULD be ok without a framebuffer... |

new version... need suggestions, testers etc etc
0.4 will now default to nano, and use vi if nano is not found....
Also, options are configured first, and then it install, so you don't have to sit and watch and wait (the only problem is if you use make menuconfig instead of genkernel, the script will stop and start menuconfig)
0.4 is very rough and I have tested it only a few times with a stage3 install.... and I just discovered a problem with fstab configuration so please edit it after the script is done if you test it now. |
