i have a mess in my head trying to understand if the new ati drivers go with the latest xorg 6.8.1 in my old ati radeon 7500?

i have already updated to:
* x11-base/xorg-x11
Latest version available: 6.8.1.901
Latest version installed: 6.8.1.901

this is what my Xorg.0.log says about AGP:

Code:
 root # less /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep AGP
        ATI Rage 128 Mobility M3 LE (PCI), ATI Rage 128 Mobility M3 LF (AGP),
        ATI Rage 128 Mobility M4 MF (AGP), ATI Rage 128 Mobility M4 ML (AGP),
        ATI Rage 128 Pro GL PA (PCI/AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro GL PB (PCI/AGP),
        ATI Rage 128 Pro GL PC (PCI/AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro GL PD (PCI),
        ATI Rage 128 Pro GL PE (PCI/AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro GL PF (AGP),
        ATI Rage 128 Pro VR PG (PCI/AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro VR PH (PCI/AGP),
        ATI Rage 128 Pro VR PI (PCI/AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro VR PJ (PCI/AGP),
        ATI Rage 128 Pro VR PK (PCI/AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro VR PL (PCI/AGP),
        ATI Rage 128 Pro VR PM (PCI/AGP), ATI Rage 128 Pro VR PN (PCI/AGP),

(II) RADEON: Driver for ATI Radeon chipsets: ATI Radeon QD (AGP),
        ATI Radeon QE (AGP), ATI Radeon QF (AGP), ATI Radeon QG (AGP),
        ATI Radeon VE/7000 QY (AGP/PCI), ATI Radeon VE/7000 QZ (AGP/PCI),
        ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP),
        ATI Radeon 8500 AIW BC (AGP), ATI Radeon 7500 QW (AGP/PCI),
        ATI Radeon 7500 QX (AGP/PCI), ATI Radeon 9000/PRO If (AGP/PCI),
        ATI Radeon 9000 Ig (AGP/PCI), ATI FireGL Mobility 9000 (M9) Ld (AGP),
        ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (M9) Lf (AGP),
        ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (M9) Lg (AGP),
        ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 IGP 7835, ATI Radeon 9200PRO 5960(PCIE),
(--) Chipset ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP) found
(**) RADEON(0): Option "AGPMode" "4"
(--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x4c57)
(II) RADEON(0): AGP card detected
(**) RADEON(0): Using AGP 4x mode
(II) RADEON(0): AGP Fast Write disabled by default
(WW) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available
(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.

my kernel has this:
Code:

CONFIG_AGP=y
# CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
CONFIG_AGP_ATI=y
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD64 is not set
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=m
# CONFIG_AGP_INTEL_MCH is not set

CONFIG_DRM=y
# CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y

after so many posts and versions over time i dont seem to find crucial contemporary solutions yet...of course i can downgrade to xorg 6.7 but i hope that maybe someone has already manage to have DRI enabled under similar specs.

(im not sure if my ati card the 7500 can benefit from the new ati drivers)

thanks for your answers.

The R7500 is not supported by the ATI binary drivers (ie ati-drivers), so don't bother with them. The kernel setup you have looks OK, but are you remembering to load both AGP modules? You need to have both the agpgart and intel-agp modules loaded. I don't think you need the ATI AGP option enabled, but compile it as a module and you can check that out easily.

FWIW.

I have a Rage 128 -- which also isn't supported in the ati-drivers.

1. kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r5

2. kernel configuration: CONFIG_MTRR=y; CONFIG_AGP=m;
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=m; CONFIG_DRM=y; CONFIG_DRM_R128=m

3. Things also work if I make all the above =y.

4. xorg-x11 version installed 6.8.0-r3

5. I never put anything in /etc/modules.autload.d/kernel-2.6. I 'think' coldplug (or hotplug) loads AGP and AGP_INTEL. I use udev. I let X load rage128

6. There was an issue with {xfree, X11}-drm in 2.4 kernels, but the last time I checked this wouldn't compile (ebuild blocked it) under the 2.6 kernel i.e. VIDEO_CARDS={radeon,rage128, etc}

7. glxinfo and glxgears both seg fault, but at least X 'works'. They never segfaulted on XFree.

no success yet, i wonder it i have to downgrade to xorg 6.7 to have DRI again . Im using kernel
Code:
2.6.10-gentoo-r4 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1600MHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

this modules are loaded:
Code:
intel_agp              22684  1
agpgart                34600  1 intel_agp

i have enabled and disabled DRM in the kernel with no success, basically i get the same error in the Xorg.0.log:
Code:
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed.  Disabling DRI.

trying to emerge x11-drm wont work for my kernel, shall i downgrade my xorg which is: version 6.8.1.901? what else can i troubleshoot before?

opengl-update ati?
opengl_update xorg-x11?

any other module i might be missing?

thanks for again.

Code:
modprobe fglrx

Make sure it's also in into your /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel2.6!

As I understand it, 'fglrx' is the ATi provided (binary) driver and 'radeon' comes with Xorg. The fact that modprobe fglrx doesn't work indicates that ati-drivers was not installed properly. Is /usr/src/linux linked to linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r4 ?

I 'believe' the Radeon 7500 is NOT one of the chips sets in the ati-driver crap. Therfore you have to use the kernel radeon.ko, which I assume you compiled as a module. If the previous is incorrect, pls ignore the following:

Code:

~% ls -al /lib/modules/2.6.10-gentoo-r5/kernel/drivers/char/agp/
total 64
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root   112 Jan 17 20:32 .
drwxr-xr-x  4 root root    96 Jan 17 20:32 ..
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 34542 Jan 17 20:32 agpgart.ko
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 27620 Jan 17 20:32 intel-agp.ko
~% ls -al /lib/modules/2.6.10-gentoo-r5/kernel/drivers/char/drm
total 116
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root     72 Jan 17 20:32 .
drwxr-xr-x  4 root root     96 Jan 17 20:32 ..
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 115856 Jan 17 20:32 r128.ko
~% lspci -v | grep ATI
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 RL/VR AGP (prog-if 00 [VGA])

I have agpgart.ko and intel-agp.ko since I built these as modules. My
chipset is Rage 128 and I have the r128.ko module.

Do a man radeon for more info.

You should have a /dev/dri/card0 and you should have something link the following in your /var/log/Xorg.0.0.log

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(--) Chipset ATI Rage 128 VR RL (AGP) found
(II) Loading sub module "r128"
(II) LoadModule: "r128"
(II) Reloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o

But in your case it should say radeon -- the above means that Xorg 'recognized' my chip set.

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 5, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 5
drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:01:00.0
(II) R128(0): [drm] loaded kernel module for "r128" driver
(II) R128(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.2
(II) R128(0): [drm] created "r128" driver at busid "pci:0000:01:00.0"

Note when I setup my Xorg.conf file (for rage 128) I used the man r128 as the bible.

#
# Stolen from Section 10.4 of README.DRI (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/)
# XFree86 had better documentation than Xorg does.
#

Section "Device"
Identifier "Rage128"
VendorName "ATI"
Driver "r128"
Option "Display" "CRT"
Option "DMAForXv" "True"
Option "ShowCache" "True"
Option "ForcePCIMode" "False"
# Option "EnablePageFlip" "True" # not supported.
BusId "1:0:0"
Option "AGPMode" "2"

Look at the portion of the Xorg log just before the DRIScreenInit failed error.

I never run ~x86 stuff, and the only reason I'm running Xorg at all is because they pulled it from portage.

Don't do a opengl-update ati --you (like me) have to do opengl-update xorg-x11

Concentrate on the section of the log where the (EE) occurred -- also realize I'm running a different version on Xorg than you where trying to 'run'.

Good luck.

You're correct, but kdag has a Radeon 7500, which isn't supported by the fglrx driver, so it's good that it isn't installed :)

yes, the link is there:

Code:
sid $ ls -la /usr/src/
lrwxr-xr-x   1 root root       22 Jan 12 00:02 linux -> linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r4

oke, thanks so far for all your feedback now things are a bit more clear.

my card cannot use the new ati-drivers and the old ones dont support fglrx in the card neither...im sure i was using DRI before when i had my old xorg that i guess it was 6.7 now that i upgraded to 6.8.1- i just dont seem to fine tune it.

following rwf's question heres what i get in my Xorg.0.log about radeon, i will check the links and .ko filez

Code:

(--) Chipset ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP) found
(**) RADEON(0): Option "AGPMode" "4"
(--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x4c57)
(II) RADEON(0): AGP card detected
(**) RADEON(0): Using AGP 4x mode
(II) RADEON(0): AGP Fast Write disabled by default
(WW) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available
(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.

im sure im close to have this rendering feature enabled, i look forward to put the (SOLVED) to this thread.

Well, I don't know what's going on.

You said lsmod showed agpgart and intel_agp loaded (I believe agpgart has to be loaded before intel_agp)

Code:

~% lsmod | grep agp
intel_agp              19484  1
agpgart                28360  2 intel_agp

so I don't know why you get RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available???

kdag: can you check your "dmesg" output for errors, particularly related to the "radeon" driver or AGP? You should be using the kernel DRI support, so try it both as builtin (like you have in your first post) and as a module (in which case you need to load the "radeon" module).

right now i have it in the kernel, not as a module:

Code:
root # modprobe radeon
FATAL: Module radeon not found.

and yes, your right. there are errors in my dmesg related to radeon ;(

Code:
dmesg | grep radeon
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.11.0 20020828 on minor 0: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]

agpgart: Detected an Intel 855PM Chipset.
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 941M
agpgart: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xd0000000

now theres something,,..ahg.

and this is how i have things in my kernel:

Code:
root # less /usr/src/linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r4/.config | grep DRM
CONFIG_DRM=y
# CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y
# CONFIG_DRM_I810 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_I830 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_I915 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_MGA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_SIS is not set

i will google radeon_cp_init called without lock error to see if theres a solution to try

http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DriTroubleshooting

there i found that the error is related to the modules loaded but i have this modules:

Code:
 lsmod | grep agp
ati_agp                 8844  0
intel_agp              22684  1
agpgart                34600  2 ati_agp,intel_agp

perhaps they dont load in the correct order or something, this is how they appear in my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

Code:
agpgart
intel_agp
ati_agp
uhci_hcd
joydev
..etc

i saw a thread related to kernels 2.6 and acpi, will read on that one, ltr

# Ftape, the floppy tape device driver
#
# CONFIG_FTAPE is not set
CONFIG_AGP=m
# CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_ATI is not set

i just found out that the kernel sources i have for linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r4 bring this option blinded

--- Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support

if i choose to have apg as a module, if agp is set to yes (included in the kernel) then i can choose to active the option of intel_agp as module
making it differ from yours...im compiling a new kernel now -r6
pff

I emerged the new ati-drivers and ran fglrxconfig, then copied XF86Config-4 to xorg.conf, skimmed it to change my input devices, etc. and rebooted. As soon as it tries to start x, I get a black screen. I was told this can be caused by vsync and refresh settings your monitor can't handle, but on that screen, my monitor tells me i'm running in 1024x768 at something like 49/53, which is completely off of what I have specified in xorg.conf.
Any thoughts would be great.

I'm not sure how. It boots to login fine, but when I try to startx, it blackscreens and i have to reset. I'll see what I get before it crashes.

Code:
 root # dmesg | grep drm
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.11.0 20020828 on minor 0: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]

i finally got it back using new kernel sources:

Code:

root # uname -a
Linux KDaG 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 #1 Wed Jan 19 12:40:53 UTC 2005 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1600MHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

so i hope now i just have to tweak my xorg.conf file to get DRI enabled..more ltr =)
