alsa and an upgrade to sys-apps/baselayout

I am installing software for my system and while checking dependcies for alsa-sound driver, the message said that I should upgrade my sys-apps layout...I dont remember what version it mentioned.

My questiong is What is the baselayout and if I upgrade it, will the upgrade break my system?. I dont want t install Gentoo again.

Also, is there someplace where the description of the packages are kept? I would like to find out what things are before installing the package.

It contains all the bootscripts and alsa the init things, so be prepared for a lot of ._cfg0000_... files in /etc. Well I upgraded it once, without not to many problems (well had to check al ._cfg files), but yes its a scary package, it has the potential of breaking your system, but it won't, maybe backup /etc so to make sure if doesn't overwrite files. btw. alsa depends on baselayout >= 1.79.
