Yes, there are several threads on this topic, but I haven't found a solution from them, as similar to most others as my problem is. (If there is a solution already posted on the board and I was just too dumb to find it, I apologize.)

When booting (with LILO), kernel informs me that:
"Cannot open root device '816' or unknown-block (8,22)"

When booting with Grub kernel tells me it can't open /dev/sdb6 partition and says that unknown-block is (0,0).

I have a SATA harddisk, controller being (as told by lspci) "Intel Corporation 82801FB/FW (ICH6/ICH6W) SATA controller". I have built this (PIIX/ICH controller) into the kernel along with all other possible SATA controller drivers there is. No modules.

My HD is at /dev/sdb,and:
/dev/sdb4 is /boot
/dev/sdb5 is swap
/dev/sdb6 is /

My fstab has the following (along with other things):
/dev/sdb4 /boot ext2
/dev/sdb5 none swap
/dev/sdb6 / ext3

The kernel has ext3 support built in, not as a module.

I can't figure out why, when booted with Grub, I get a different error message, as my grub.conf has:
title=Gentoo
root (hd0,3)
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/sdb6
---

/dev/sdb4 = (hd0,3), am I right? It is the only HD and when checked via grub command line, it tells me the same thing when trying to autocomplete (hd0, with tab.

What to do? What am I missing (except a few points from IQ)? My motherboard is Intel D915PGNL, if that helps at all.

I had this same problem a few weeks ago when I upgraded to kernel 2.6.12. I have always compiled ext3 support into the kernel, but for some reason I had to actually enable it as a module, then it worked. You may want to try changing ext3 support to a module instead.
