I recently installed UT2004 from the DVD and AA from portage and found that the sound skips. It's strange because the graphics and everything else is fine.
Anyway, it'd be nice to get the sound to work right, but I can deal with it skipping if I can't get it to work.
If you need details, I've got an AMD Athlon XP 1400+, an nvidia geforce fx 5700LE graphics card, an onboard SiS soundcard (I'm not exactly sure what it is, my dad got my computer for me), 256 megs of ram (pathetic, I know. I'm hopefully getting more soon), and kernel 2.6.10-cko3.
and fyi, tribes 2 works flawlessly. |

In your home directory, create an .openalrc
with:
(define speaker-num 2)
(define devices '(alsa))
(define alsa-out-device default) _________________ Nothing can stop me now, cuz I just don't care. |

alright, I did that, but then I remembered that I don't think I ever set up alsa, so I go to emerge alsa-driver, and I get this:
Quote: | * Determining the location of the kernel source code
* Found kernel source directory:
* /usr/src/linux
* Found sources for kernel version:
* 2.6.10-cko3
* Checking for suitable kernel configuration options
* ALSA is already compiled into the kernel.
* Please check to make sure these options are set correctly.
* Once you have satisfied these options, please try merging
* this package again.
!!! ERROR: media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.8 failed.
!!! Function check_extra_config, Line 450, Exitcode 0
!!! Incorrect kernel configuration options
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message. |
what could be set incorrectly? |

you already have ALSA compiled in your kernel. You don't need to emerge alsa-driver _________________ Nothing can stop me now, cuz I just don't care. |

Portage makes me install alsa-driver when I try to install anything that I have to get for alsa, like alsa-utils and alsa-tools. I fixed it though using --nodeps, but now xmms won't play... I think it used oss and now I don't have oss so yeah. |

I'm assuming you configured your own kernel. Make sure in the alsa section, make sure oss-emulation is compiled in as well. _________________ Nothing can stop me now, cuz I just don't care. |

yep, I just did that and now xmms works, but I have random cracking sometimes, like when something is loading. |

You might want to check out the alsa homepage, and google to see if there is an issue with the crackling with your specific sound card chipset. _________________ Nothing can stop me now, cuz I just don't care. |
