I have just now installed the latest nitro-sources, and now my box booting up time has increased VERY dramaticaly!
But besides this every thing else is just the way it was, no performance gained
Maybe I am doing something wrog? Is there anyody else who is experiensing this? |

dibblethewrecker: Security fixes are included on an "as-I-see-them" basis. That means that if I see the patch, I'll try to apply it.
I checked that one out, and I have yet to apply anything that directly fixes it. If it's fixed in one of the big mm patches or sommat then yes, it's fixed. Otherwise it's still gaping wide open and waiting for any fool to use in order to compromise your box.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
EDIT: Damn you, Andrew Morton, for you have beaten me again with your incredible programming skills and your fast rereleasing of the exact same patches you put into the previous version of your patchsets! I concede; you are the better kernel hacker.
EDIT: Did I actually just say that?
EDIT: I guess I did.
EDIT: I suppose that means I'll actually wait for the ck patch instead of making it myself. Oh well. No guarantees as to whether mm will be in the next nitro; I might still be too upset with Mr. Morton to even consider it. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

strange problems:
1) can't switch to console from X. (Xorg.0.log says "Failed to switch consoles (Operation not permitted)" )
2) when starting any program that uses direct rendering getting:
libGL error: XF86DRIAuthConnection failed
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
(mode 666 for /dev/dri/card0 is set)
3) hangs when exiting X
4) since 2.6.10-nitro2 can't reboot or poweroff, but swsusp2 works fine

Tiger683: Shouldn't be much longer now...
k_max: Weird stuff. For the X issues, I'd say try searching the DE forums; seems like something that would have cropped up before. Not really sure why you can't reboot.
charlieg: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Progress thus far: Just finished the regular, now doing QA for compiling and integration of experimental stuff. Barring unforseen problems, I should have it out quite soon.
EDIT: Done with e, doing QA for both again just to make sure I got everything as far as compiling goes. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

Was just wondering if smone could help me with an odd problem ...
I'm running 2.6.10-nitro4 with SMP (set to 2 cpu) and SMT (for the hyperthread) enabled.
/proc/cpuinfo displays 2 processors
Now, oddly enough, cpu usage never goes above 50%.
To test this, I've tried using mencode and it'll balance out over 46-52%.
Any1 have any ideas as to why ?
Thanx for your time. |

I have compiled the new kernel but I cannot run gdm. I get this error:
gdm file gdm.c: line 770 (N/A): cannot run setegid to 32: Operation not permitted.
I even tried to run it as root and the same thing happens. |

I admit defeat. The nvidia driver has beaten me. I spent a good hour fiddling with various patches (from minion.de and ck), but it just won't work. Compilation and loading both go perfectly. Then when X tries to start, things go wrong. Not fun.
"What does this mean to me?" is what you might be asking yourself.
In short, it means that you won't be getting the next nitro for a bit. Everything works perfectly in this one, and there's quite a few impressive things that I hacked in. But I'm not going to release it because it would be somewhat pointless if nobody could use it. I suppose all you people who use kernel drm could, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the preparation time if only a couple people will use it.
My best guess is that a better nvidia fix will come around within a day or so and then I can release this behemoth. Until then, drool at this partial changelog:
Code: | 2.6.11-rc1 #newest kernel version
-ac4/7 #alan cox's patchset
-alsa 1.0.7 #includes several misc fixes which may or may not affect things
reiser4 #newest snapshot with extra patches
vesafb-tng #still works
-fbsplash #broken
chmp #new version of mouse polling patch
-sk98lin driver #sk98lin network driver
inotify #newer version
-swsusp2
-mm1
config-nr-tty-devices
cflags-selection-for-nitro #change cflags for kernel
-hostap #included in main
-ckdev #latest ck patch
-alsa 1.0.8-rc2
swsusp2+win4lin #see note
-orinoco #included in main
================================
+alsa 1.0.8
+bootsplash #crazy kernel devs...
+mm1
+genetic scheduling #you don't even want to know how long it took
+16k stacks |
Hopefully nvidia stuff will be fixed soon.
If there's a high demand for this (even knowing that nvidia (and most likely ati) drivers won't work) then I'll release it. Otherwise sit tight and keep enjoying nitro4. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

a little late this time with my thanks
Thanks for another great patchset!
Found a bug though:
after running for about 3 days at 100% of processor capacity, the network card failed, by giving me a 40% packet loss...
A reboot fixed this.
Guess that's why this kernel is not recommended for servers
NB: not sure if that "100% processor load" part is related, it just sounds cool _________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit. |

you know.... actually -- the other nite i noticed (after running about 5 days) that internet things were going awful slow. especially web browsing.... resolving a site took a long time. I cannot recall if it cleared up, but I know i had to reboot after borking my system its going fine right now tho....
i have NO idea if its related. could have beeen some websites, could have been my ISP.

Are you sure it's not just 1 patch that's causing the nvidia problems, like 16k stacks or something from -mm? |

I don't even have 16k stacks enabled, and I tried the non-mm version as well. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

It seems to me that every new kernel version lately breaks the nvidia drivers for a short while :\.

I get an identical error to a13x. Also when trying to use sudo I get:
Code: | unable to change to sudoers gid: Operation not permitted |
Any ideas? I did not have this problem with nitro2 (although I have changed my kernel config considerably for my nitro4 kernel)

Mmm..will that be orinoco with "monitor" mode patch? cause..some of already patched kernel have orinoco patch but they don't use orinoco with monitor mode.
If you check out nitro3 ...this kernel have orinoco with monitor mode ..which is great .

kontol: I'm not sure if it has monitor mode. When I tried to apply the patch, it claimed that it had already been applied, leading me to believe that the drivers were updated in this release.
In other news, I released 2.6.11-rc1-nitro0 into the wild. I'd consider it unstable (even if you don't choose the more unstable version), and if you're worried about that kind of thing you'll want to stick with nitro4 for a bit. If rc1 doesn't get the nvidia thing fixed VERY soon, I'll probably release another 2.6.10-based nitro so that there will be something more stable for people to go to. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.
