I got my wife a German keyboard for Christmas, but I only use a 'normal' one. How can I set up gentoo so that we can 'hot swap' keyboards ? |

I don't think PS/2 support hotplug. I think usb keywoard may work. I have never tried 2 keyboards, but I have two mouse setup for my notwebook. Compile your kernel with usb support (etc.), emerge hotplug usbutils, modify the XF86Config file. These detail steps can be found for mouse setup in the forums. |

The PS2 port doesn't support hot swap, and it is slightly possible to burn something out doing so.
USB keyboards should work though, but I don't know how to set that up. |

ya know, i've been messing with the keyboards, and finding out that if i have the german keyboard plugged in, but don't look at the keyboard, (as I am right now as I type this), i get english, so it seems that i don't have a hardware problem as much as a software problem.
is there an easy way to tell the X-server to switch interpretations of the keyboard, maybe even without having to restart X ? |

Are you using KDE by any chance? KDE has a keyboard control module, accessible via the Control Center or the little switcher you put in the panel. I'm toggling between Japanese, German and French all the time (without changing the physical keyboard, though, just have to remember the layouts). I presume Gnome has something similar, but I've never bothered looking for it there. |

I was wondering something simialr. Are you telling me noone else has made a keyboard swap program that can stand alone? some X-util perhaps?
PS/2 might not oficially hot-swap, but that has never stopped me from switching between a dvorak and a swedish keyboard whithout rebooting.

OK, a little search of the XFree docs gave this little nifty result:
Code: | setxkbmap -layout se |
OK, Unless you want a swedish kb, you don't write se, but de-latin1 or whatever. The arguments are identcal to the ones you would use in the XF86Config file.
If youhave a more exotic keyboard, you would use the -geometry and the other whings you should have in your XF86Config allready as well. |
