bla, took some more time than expected to finish all the stuff i wanted (which i couldnt) but now i really dont have any more time left to dedicate to this project. for some time i guess.
however the 0.19.5.iso should be online in a few days (depends on the admins).
first of all: since i have a swap partition on my primary testing station (my laptop) i did not notice how slugish everything gets without swap (and only 256mb ram). i did optimize a bit but its still far from perfect. so i strongly recommend having more than 256mb ram *or* a swap partition on the harddisk/usbstick whatsoever *or* alot of patience . also the "store configuration" isnt included yet, the menues still need to be overhauled (i started linking some of the stuff but its faaaaar from done).
on the bright side however, this version does not have a fucked up /var directory (like 0.17.1) so its possible to copy the dvd 1:1 on the harddisk if u want to.
if u should experience hangs / freezes on startup when coldplugging pci/usb devices (noticed that once on a friends workstation with multiple soundcards, when loading the terratec module) u can skip the coldplugging process with ctrl + c.
alot custom modules are added to this version to enhance with usb (web)cam support (e.g the pwc module for philipps/logitech cameras etc)
this is still a beta release, but alot improved over 0.17.1 in terms of configuration, package count etc. however the same rules apply, dont blame me if u download 3gb just to find out it doesnt work or u dont like it or ....
widescreen users: i did not get access to a widescreen laptop so i could not configure anything, however the i855resolution hack is included (in the root home).
3D-acceleration works for nvidia/ati (all of them) out of the box, the opengl-update process on startup can take a few minutes so be patient...ati 7000/7500 mobile users, i am using the xorg drivers since using the ati-drivers would hmm decrease performance by ~200%
if u like the idea of a gentoo livedvd desktop system feel free to contribute with ideas, scripts, art, improvements of any kind . as mentioned above i wont be dedicating time to this project for some time (i promised to write a howto...that one will be delayed too but i guess meanwhile there are hundreds around) but i will continue this project for sure . u dont need to be some kind of guru (if u take a closer look at this dvd u will see i am definitely not ), beeing a *user* should be more than enough to be able to contribute. although some basic bash scripting skills would be usefull.

i placed the link online now, the torrent file is still missing on that url, but today i am at the institute and will make sure thats it gets there asap.
i wanted to use the time and fix some of the broken packages (skype for example doesnt work) but the harddisk of my development station (murphies law) crashed yesterday . ..i am quite happy this happened 2 days *after* the final 0.19.5 version .
some apps might be broken (segfaults, like skype) but i didnt find those yet. as mentioned earlier i wont have time to invest into this project for some time, however if i should aquire a new harddrive somehow i will place a up to date (snyc/emerge world) version online to fix those crashing apps. _________________ Gentoos are the fastest underwater swimming birds, reaching speeds of 36 km/h (22.3 mph).

Can you include the rt2500 wireless drivers? It's in portage.

they will be included in the next version (currently doing 0.20.0, basicly world update, xorg-6.8.0-r4 etc). i have some opengl problems with nvidia cards on that one and very few time so that will take some time. _________________ Gentoos are the fastest underwater swimming birds, reaching speeds of 36 km/h (22.3 mph).

Just tried this disc today. Very impressive! Very usefull, too, as my main Gentoo install is borked. I successfully played UT2004 using the disc, running off the HD of course. Couldn't get larger levels to download, need to figure out where it's trying to store the files and symlink it to the HD.
Suggestions for next release:
Chormium B.S.U. (arcade game that uses Open GL ['emerge chromium'])
Mplayer, but this time in English.
Docs to install the LiveDVD to a harddisk.
If system has less than 256MB, and a swap is not already present, create a loop back file for swap on FAT32.
Hardware I'm running with:
Athlon XP 2600+
512MB DDR33
Geforce 4 TI 4200 128MB
60GB and 160GB HDs (512MB and 2GB swap, respectively)
Logitech MX Pro Duo mouse (or something like that)
Fellowes Opti-Gel Cordless mouse
X10 Lola remote (need to figure out how to get it mapped, up down works though)
Thanks for a great release! |

@Chormium looks cute --> will be added
@mplayer: yes it noticed it is in german...i just have *no* idea why?!?!?
@docs to install will be added (a small howto), best way ist to simply rsync it to the harddisk)
@swap: creating a loopback on a fat partition is a *great* idea, why didnt i think of that?
i was planning to use usb sticks as swap, but their memory technology is not "ideal" for swap -> they would be damaged after a few times
i currently have a very nice version ready, but those nvidia drivers still claim that glx/dri have unresolved symbols...i dont catch why.
once i get a new development station i guess i should be able to fix that
also, if you did not download yet, dont download the gentoo version but the EMBnet version (difference is only default background image), but the EMBnet version was released a week later an has some stuff fixed, which is still broken on the gentoo. +the default website (localhost) is done in php at the embnet version and looks much better

that makes it hard to resist
Could you also add cgoban?
It's a Go internet thingie. Not that i can play it but the anime Hikaru no Go is makes it look intresting :S
2 bad my traineeship doesn't have dvd drives so i can check it there. At home im too lazy to reboot. I might use it to reinstall though. My gentoo is falling appart. I gues i should stick with nearly default USE flags... since im a n00b.
[edit]
add gnugo too so pl can use cgoban to play vs the local computer

after extensive testing as my desktop system i am now building a clean version entire from scratch (that will take some compile / adapting time), however i will ofc include that cgoban game
the new version has the focus on transparency (every USE flag for every package is defined, etc)
--> should be possible to administer / upgrade etc... once installed to a hd (unlike the old version ) _________________ Gentoos are the fastest underwater swimming birds, reaching speeds of 36 km/h (22.3 mph).

yup i am still working on it
although i have finished 90% of the compilation, the release i guess will take a couple of weeks. i am currently still trying to include openmosix, but it seems there are quite a few bugs (see also... http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-327925-highlight-openmosix.html ). + i am still debuging some problems (for example, i cannot load the rtc module anymore since 2.6.11, no matter which box i boot on)
+i am implementing some rather crazy stuff to *drasticly* reduce the RAM-usage, if that works the livedvd will only need ~20mb for filesystem usage (it should run even with 128mb ram then...)
+ its not possible (or very tricky) in gnome 2.10 to edit the menu structures -> that i need to figure out before anything else can happen
since my equery f > package.list crashes, here is a the world file (if u want to check on installed.packages). not every package is listed there but...
http://www.doebling.sth.ac.at/livedvd/world.current
new in upcoming:
xorg 6.8.2-r1
gnome 2.10
virtual filesystem
+lots of other stuff i cant remember _________________ Gentoos are the fastest underwater swimming birds, reaching speeds of 36 km/h (22.3 mph).

agreed, its a "livedvd" project...
...based on gentoo
-> =gentoo releated...in my humble opinion at least...
but never mind, this thread is closed (i am not going to post to a "annything not related to Gentoo" thread ) _________________ Gentoos are the fastest underwater swimming birds, reaching speeds of 36 km/h (22.3 mph).
