I recently installed Gentoo, but it seems like my XMMS player cant play mp3's, i get this message in the terminal when i try to play mp3s:

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Device or resource busy

Why is it like that? and how do i fix it?

I mean, there's no prob with my sound card coz i can listen to normal "errror" sound when im using kde/gnome...

I get that error a lot in XMMS. In the preferences, click 'Configure' and then 'use alternate device'. Leave it on /dev/dsp (if that's your sound dev) and it should help.

Also, when closing XMMS, remove the things from your playlist and load them up after you reload xmms. XMMS is really strange, it works sometimes, and not others.

I've used xmms for many years and never had a problem with it.

If you're using Alsa set your sound output to use Alsa. If your sound card doesn't support hardware sound mixing run everything through artsd and you shouldn't get errors like that.

That error is almost certainly the result of artsd or esd blocking the sound card (confirmed because you are hearing sounds in KDE/GNOME). Simply do like Malakin says and emerge xmms-arts (think that's the name, if not it's something like that) and then change your output plugin to artsd.
