Hello,
I am planning to buy a Radeon8500 card. However, I've read, that there are problems with mplayer. Has anyone experiences with the XFree4.2 drivers (not the ATi ones or gatos) and can confirm or deny this ? I do not care for 3D, but viseoplayback is essential.
I know, this is not really gentoo related, but since I am running gentoo ...

The problem you will encounter is that XV support (Hardware accelerated video scaling) is broken in the current xfree 4.2.x drivers.
I use the current xfree 4.2.99.3 ebuild in the portage tree which fix this issue (and 3D Accel.). Although it's not an official release, this version runs very stable for me.
The release of 4.3.0 which is not that far away will finally fix these problems in a stable release.
I didn't encounter any other problems with MPlayer using the said xfree version. So I think you can get the card! |

| The current drivers provided by ATI have xv support. I have not run into any problems with video acceleration with these drivers yet. |
