I can't get to read your how-to or either see the screenshots because http://pstudios.ath.cx/ is broken for me. 
It would be very nice if you (Pwnz3r) could put that how-to on the gentoo forums so that it's always available.
P.S. Or maybe somebody can send me that how-to or configuration please.  |

I can post a link to my setup. I tarred it up in response to a request on the FVWM fora. You'll need to supply your own wallpaper, but that's going to phase anyone reading this thread

Yea, I wish the website/how-to was actually accessible still. Or rather I wish I would have saved the original and my own config which both have since been lost

Have a look at the XDM Themestuff page. It's the reference I used to write my XDM screen.

Yep I've read that page. Really, all I needed was to see a working config because I had forgotten what was what. But basically theres Xresources for your fonts/login box placement/etc, Xsetup for running things like setting the background and clocks, etc, and GiveConsole to kill anything you started in Xsetup.
So, after looking at your posted configuration and VoVan's from a few pages back, I got something going that I like.
Simple but enough for me : Click

One thing I'd add - GiveConsole isn't the best place to kill apps started by XDM. It works ok for most things, but if you kill XDM with control-R (as I sometimes do) then the progam will remain running, at least if it doesn't depend on X, anyway.
I think I might go back to running xmms for my login music...

No, the problem is not GiveConsole - this is the only place where these things can go. It is that control-R thing. Take a look at the Xresources file of xdm (/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources). At the top there is the option

The funktion abort-display is explained in the xdm manpage:

Terminates the server, disabling it. This action
is not accessible in the default configuration.
There are various reasons to stop xdm on a system console, such as
when shutting the system down, when using xdmshell,
to start another type of server, or to generally access the console.
Sending xdm a SIGHUP will restart the display. See the section
Controlling XDM.

Basically this means that control-R exits the X-Server but not xdm. This is needed if you can choose between different X-Servers (normally on different hosts). In this case you run a chooser which let you -surprise- choose the server you want to login. If you did so and change your mind you can type control-R and get back to the chooser to connect to another server.
If you do this with only one local server running, you will exit X - meaning kill it and all X-apps. This includes xdm, but as xdm is not shut down properly, the none-X apps will stay.
There is no function to kill xdm in the supported functions for the *translation resource. The closest ones are abort-session (which will restart the X-Server) and restart-session (which will reset the server and starts a new session). So I think it's generally a good advice to avoid the control-R on a normal desktop system (with only one local server running).

EDIT:::
I'm also having problems with my configuration. I have this annoying white/shaded border around the login prompt and also have a horizontal rule dividing the "Welcome to MACHINE" and the "user/password" section that I would like to get rid of. Also how would I go about putting "user" and "password" on th same line and centering it? Thanks! |

Hello,
perhaps you know the problem:
XDM looks quite ugly when it starts. It looks like a computer screen back from the 80s.
Does anyone know wethere there are some nice themes or anything else that would make my xdm look better.
I don't want to use kdm, gdm, or so...

Maybe you could try Qingy? That doesn't use X Windows for login, but allows you to start any console or X session. Or do you only want xdm?

oh, you guys with your smoking AMD64 megamachines.... spare a thought for those of us with slow processors, not much RAM, limited disk space... you can't blame us for trying to avoid all those dependencies...  |

I tried to make my xdm look good  but somehow I can't set a background picture with feh.
What did I do worng?

Did you try another app? I personally am using xsetbg:

Hi all
I am enable to put xscreensaver (only for the idle mode) with xdm, I've try lots of possibility, long search, but nothing work, the better that I had was:

It's tricky.
The trouble seems to be that the login widget grabs the keyboard and won't get go. This means, among other things, that if you have a password on the screensaver, you won't be able to get out of it.
I know this because I once tried to use the Matrix screensaver on the root window. For some reason it displayed over the top of the login widget, and I couldn't get rid of it to log in.
I never did get that working. Sorry, I know that's not much help.
