Netra T1 100 - no cdrom after reboot

I've successfully installed 2004.3 on an ancient Netra T1 100 from the LiveCD (so obviously I have a CD-ROM.) After rebooting, though, I don't see this device - /dev/cdroms is empty. I included SCSI CDROM in the kernel, as well as any other CDROM related setting I could find. Can someone please help me determine why this device is not showing up? Thanks.
