Hello,

I merged proftpd and it´s running with xinetd (I tried with proftpd start and get the same error):

If I attempt to login on my box I got:

bash-2.05a# ftp localhost
Connected to localhost.
220 ProFTPD 1.2.7 Server (ProFTPD Default Installation) [batuta.vrl.ufrn.br]
Name (localhost:joao): joao
500 AUTH not understood.
SSL not available
331 Password required for joao.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.

Someone can help me?

Sounds like a problem with your PAM... check out this link:

So to recap... edit your /etc/pam.d/ftp file, make sure it's in order, and then make sure /etc/ftpusers is setup correctly.

Finally, the user at /etc/passwd didn't have a shell

Now, the proftpd is working.
