projkt4,

You should abandon genkernel and roll your own. the config process will take you a few hours the first time but you will get faster. It will get down to 10 min.

If you have a GUI, use make xconfig or make gconfig. You can use the config tool and read the help so much more easiliy, thats where your time will go.

Go through every option and read the help - apply the following rules of thumb.
1. If you need an option to boot say 'Y'
2. If you will not need an option at all say 'N'
3. If you need an option after boot say 'M' or 'Y' (M is better)
4. If you don't understand the help, don't mess. The defaults are sensible.

Examples of 1 are the HDD chip set driver and root filesystem.
Examples of 2 are network cards you don't have
Examples of 3 is almost anything else you want to use. USB, sound, networking. Its easy to add a missed module without a full build. Modules make debug easier too .
