|
|
Hi, i'm suspicious there is something wrong when using ext3 and the grntoo kernel together.
Anyway here is the story:
I use gentoo on 12 servers at my work and have been very happy with it, however on three different servers i got ext3 to go crazy at some point, not during a reboot just while running, after each case i would have to make major fixes to the filesystem by hand (most of the time i reformated to be sure).
The common point of those 3 machines is that they were using the gentoo-kernel while the other machines where using vanilla-kernel.
Since i reinstalled those machines with vanilla-kernel the problem didn't occur again.
One more thing the filesystem apparnetly was especially corrupted in the /usr/portage/ tree, so it migth have something to do with portage ?
The machine are all intel (2 smp and one single) one is scsi raid(ICP), one is ide, one is ide-raid(adaptec), the partitions which got corrupted was always the one containing /usr/portage, and i was using ext3.
I'm now using ext3 with vanilla-kerenl and it seems ok.
I'm not sure exactly what kernel i was running, but i installed those machines respectively 6 weeks ago, 5 weeks ago and 3 weeks ago, all kernel where 2.4 (2.4.18 i think).
Sorry i don't have any core files or dump.
Just wanted to let you know that there *migth* be something going on.
Thanks. |

| Moving from Installing Gentoo to Other Things Gentoo, as it is not an installation problem. |

| I've not been using Gentoo kernels for a long time now, and I've been using vanilla with ext3 with no problems, also. I've seen several people on the forums having problems with ext3 corruption, so perhaps (?) that at least adds to what your saying. |

I suggest you take a look at this thread since I had a lot of problems with Ext3 myself.
