After long, very long search I chose eMachines M5405 as my future notebook. What do you think about this model? What do you think about quality, support, performance of eMachines notebooks?
I want to mention that I chose eMachines just because I'm looking for budget lappy to use it for common tasks (email, browsing etc.).
After doing some research on the net I found out that eMachines M5405 got PC-Magazine's "Editor's Choice" so maybe this notebook is worth his price ($999.99 at BestBuy). More details about this model.
Waiting for your replies. Thanks!

I don't need AOL anyway. There is no AOL where I live. The thing is that notebooks are way too expencive here in Lithuania and I got possibility to order one in USA (cause my friend is visiting there). I must send my "order" and he will buy it for me. After his comeback I will return him money.
...such a deal...

This might be a good place to start to see about emachines & linux in general.

I'm interested in AMD laptop performace (battery, heat, etc.)

Let's hope that still holds true now that IBM has sold its PC business. :(

Yes, I understand that too. But sometimes theres something "pay-for-the-brand" or "pay-for-the-name" in case of IBM, actualy. Every huge company uses such politics.

Do they suck for some reason or just "simply suck"? More details if it's possible, thanks.

I had a p200 machine by them. Worked great for six months. Paid 3 grand for that fucker. paid for a 3 year warranty. Mobo died. Took them 3 weeks to send me a new motherboard. Got it. Took another 4 weeks to get a technican to come. The CPU was only 166, incompatible. Sat for 5 weeks until the new mobo with the right cpu came. 3 weeks later a technican shows up.

As I understood you are talking about desktop pc that you bought from Gateway. In my case everything goes arround notebook.
Yes, I have heard that few years before this company really sucked on their support, warranties etc., but now they give you a quality product. As I noticed, only one person out of ten tells that gateway/emachines sucks and 50% of people who say that bought gateway/emachines product (often desktop pc) couple of years ago.
So, theoretically, it's quite possible to get a good lappy from them now.

I had a 486/33 EISA system from Gateway. The support was the best I've ever had. Parts were replaced within a few days by express shipping (not overnight). I've also had experiences with shoddy equipment from Dell. As far as support goes, I've heard horror stories even from Apple, who are supposed to have excellent service.

Think it's time for me to order this beauty - eMachines M5405. The intresting thing is that I will not be able to use warranty or any kind of service plan. It is so because, actually, I live in Lithuania and my brother is visiting USA for some business affairs. So, I will tell him what notebook I want and he will buy it and "ship" it right to my hands.
Here in Lithuania notebooks are very expensive and it is possible to save about 1/3 of original price if notebook is bought abroad.
So, to pick good, reliable thing is an objective in this case.
I already said to my brother to "keep an I on this lappy" at BestBuy shop.

Hey, very funny thing happened to me. Remeber I was considering to by eMachines notebook? Well, actually... from emachines M5405 I jumped to HP ze4910us.
Don't really understood why, but who cares? CPUs (AMD Sempron 2800+ and Intel Celeron M 330 1.4GHz) were the main difference between these two models. I think that Intel thing is more reliable than AMD.
BTW, HP costed me $800 (with rebates) and eMachines would cost $999. Thats a big plus for HP, huh?

Someone at work brought in an e-machines laptop because they needed the VPN client loaded on it. It had a 17 inch wide screen display but the resolution was only 1280x800 or something so it looked bad.

I joked with another guy that I could VNC into his laptop and still have room to work on my laptop screen.. (1400x1050)

Well, I think in the long term their quality is going to suffer. It started with their printers, which use to be "the best" in the industry. My problem is with the direction Carly "New Gulfstream After Layoffs" Fiorina is taking the company. I don't care for it, and do no trust her to keep customers or quality as important factors to the company. Instead of competing with Porsche (quality), she wants to compete with Yugo (cheap). Just my opinion. Your proabaly safe, quality wise, with the laptop though.

I had an old HP laptop (500mhz) that was rock solid. I eneded up getting another one when I retired that guy. The new one (2200+) SUCKED. The touchpad was awful. The battery life sucked. The fan was loud, the Harddrive was loud, it got really hot, it had speedstepping so when unplugged it more than halved the CPU speed...ugh. I got rid of it and got a Sony VGN-S260 and love it to death. Centrino rules.
