also, does anybody have any idea why the dev kernel would not like mounting root for me? It says unable to mount root. I did the standard compile/install commands as any other kernel. Was there something different that I was supposed to do??

I'm going to assume you meant sys-kernel/development-sources. Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you regarding that particular problem. You would do well to stay away from the development kernels, since they tend to break things - hence the name "development-kernel" |

.
dont hurt me..but
i use windows2000 when doing all my A/V or 3D work as the software is more mature. I prefer 3dstudiomax over blender any day and VirtualDUB is my choice for video compression when not useing Adobe Products.
I do dual boot this machine with gentoo, gentoo is my primary desktop but i still need windows for my media work. I would of course change over to linux if the right software were available. |

Lol, yeah - I have the same problems - The only exception being video and sound encoding which i can do with transcode and lame/sox . That's why I boot windoxs xp under vmware (dual booting always puts me under stress, that's why I don't do it anymore) with all my adobe, macromedia and what'not tools since unfortunately there's nothing yet comparable for linux. In fact right now I'm booting into vmware-windows-xp because Gimp wasn't quite up to what I wanted to do. But it's only a matter of time until apps such as gimp and blender ,etc. will be up to par with windows based apps. As linux gains popularity there's also the increasing chance that many companies such as adobe will eventually port their prime applications over to linux, especially since linux enjoys dramatic adoption rates with the film and arts industries. |

one day linux will have these apps
i do like the gimp though, pretty powerful for free software..
im looking for a 3dmax replacement, and an adobe premier replacement. those are the big two, though others would be nice. |

I think there is a linux version for lightwave....but lightwave is very expensive. _________________ They say when you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear satanic messages...but that's nothing, if you play it forward it will install Windows! |

Did you enable the preemptive kernel option in the kernel?
It seems that it does not enable per default so this causes some serious lag(and a lot of crashes).
Btw my system is on a 300 watt power suplly(working fine )
Amd athlon thunderbird 1400
Geforce 4 ti4200
384 ddr ram
2 big fans(80 mm) zalman
1 philips 48x16x48
1 dvd-rom
2 hd´s(one old maxtor for winblows, and 1 WD 120 gig for linux )
logitech mx 700
Sound card
network card
pci usb
So a 500/600 watt power supply is overkill, 300/350 watt would be enough. |

I thought you were supposed to not use preemptive and low latency at the same time... so which one's better??

I whould suggest you use vanilla 2.4.18 source.
as i know all after .18 have a bug, that caouses everything to lagg on full system load. which is why i dont use 'em.
when i used 2.4.20 and if i compiled something the mouse whould lagg and such, the only thing that helped was reniceing the gcc cc1 cc0 as and all the others that where taking up resources.
you could try that too.
but i suggest u use 2.4.18
theres isnt anything in the later kerneles worth having. for me.
and i whould also suggest you rutn off the preemt stuff if you have them on and test them.
just try diffrenet kernels. _________________ NoManNoProblem
