Hey guys,
I emerged vmware-workstation and also got a key from VMWare.
I got alot of problems with it and gentoo. Wondering if anyone else has problems and found a way around them.
One thing is the prebuilt modules. None are available for the kernel we are using. 2.4.20 - Vanilla-Sources
It attempts to build the modules from source and seems to go ok - but I really wonder if so due to the other problem.
When I am trying to install an OS..ie Windows Advanced Server it makes it so far and then VmWare just closes suddenly. Then other times I get an error like Channel Floppy error.....
Anyone know what might be going on? VMWare wont offer support so I am at a loss - This is a trial version - not gonna purchase a full version if i cant get it to work!
thanx |

| I'm stuck at a similar point -- I'm a dual-booter, trying to get the dark side to cooperate without much luck. It gets so far into the boot, then dies at "giveio.sys" (gleaned from trying to boot into safe mode). The vole hath fouled again. |

To update the post.... Figured out all the problems with VMWare
In the kernel you gotta make sure that Floppy IDE support is selected and also I added Fat and MS-Dos and ntfs support to the kernel as well.
Re configured VMWare and everything worked great. Super fast and stable
Even have SQl Server 2000 running on it with no troubles.
Hope this helps anyone having poblems with it |

Hmmm, my vmware runs fine and I definately do not have Floppy IDE support compiled into my kernel (it's not even a module). Also, you really didn't need ntfs and dos/fat unless you plan on reading those partitions from INSIDE linux (not vmware). Windows insides VMWare can already read them simply because it's Windows, Linux doesn't need to help. |

very strange. But guess that is what we expect in Linux sometimes. Probably just recompiling my kernel solved whatever problems existed.
oh well. Good news is it works now |
