why do people have lisps and cant pronounce their "R's"? is it something medical or are they too lazy to get it right?

In most cases it's medical (or physiological, rather). For instance my little brother has a shortened "string" under his tongue, which means it's slightly less flexible, so he lisps a bit sometimes. The doctors thought he wouldn't be able to speak at all when he was born, but he proved them wrong. :)

I have a friend who is completely unable to pronounce neither English nor Spanish r's correctly, only the Danish which is very similar to the French and German. No matter how much he tries he just can't seem to make his tongue do it.

I have several lisps: CMUCL, SBCL, GCL, CLISP, Guile, Bigloo and Chicken. Yeah, I like playing around with them.

My history teacher once said that the reason the spanish lisple is 'cause a spanish king a few centuries ago lispled and the spanish worshipped him so badly they all started to talk like him.

It's prolly not true, but can someone enlighten me ?

Obligotary quote from Are You Being Served:

Captain Peacock: "He can't get his tongue round his R's."
(Everyone's looking at Mr Humphries.)
(Slight pause)
Mr Humphries: "Don't look at me, I'm not going to say anything."

Or something to that effect.

It could be medical, or more probably to do with how they learnt to talk when they were little.

I don't say my R's properly. It comes out like a weird w kind of sound. Somewhere between an r and a w. I don't know. I used to get flak at school for it and stuff. I think it is to do with when I was learning to talk when I was little, because my dad doesn't say his quite right either. Mind you, it's strange because my mum is Finnish and could roll her r's up and down a hill.

I guess it's kinda like accents... When you are growing up you learn to talk with the accent of the people around you. If you move to a different area you may will pick up the local accent. For example, I've just moved to Leicester with my wife. She'd previously lived in Lancashire but now she is picking up a Leicester accent. I'm not picking it up though. I don't tend to pick up accents. I lived in Surrey (posh) when I was young and grew up talking like people from there. Then I moved to near Liverpool (scouse, mate!). I didn't really pick up the accent (though people who aren't from round there tell me I have a scouse accent, which is hilarious because if they ever ran into a real scouser or someone from Birkenhead they'd have no idea what they were saying) but my younger siblings did. Anyway. Now that I'm living in Leicester with my wife, I'm not picking up the Leicester accent but she is, and weirder still, she is picking up my weird r/w thing and says her r's like me.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I just remembered the hilarious scenes from "The life of Brian".
Biggus Dickus no1 Biggus Dickus no2
Welease Bwian.
Some of the better moments in the history of cinema.

I have a friend who was sent to speech therapy as a child because he couldn't pronounce "th" as in "the".. Instead of "the", he'd say "du".... So it's either he wasn't able to mimic his parents language in his early years or something else. Today, he's able to speak correctly...

Some people just have issues with tongue placement. Just like a person who doesn't speak spanish has a really difficult time with rolled double R's... As in carro (car).

Fucking hell, a talking 'orse. how now brown fucking cow. In the north of England, dropping "H"s is commonplace. Nothing to do with ignorance or lazyness, most are quite aware of the so called correct Oxbridge pronounciations but actively choose not to adopt them. We have our own regional identity and language variance. English is not static like Latin, you speak your particular dialect and we shall continue to speak ours.
