Are you using KDE? Are you also using System Notifications? I was, and the New Window sound effect was blocking DosBox from opening the audio driver. Try turning off that sound effect.
Also, then try these things to run your game:
Code: | ### set sound for ALSA ###
export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa
### combine commands (-c) to run and then exit ###
dosbox -c "mount c /home/chris/dosgames" -c "c:" -c "cd dmaster" -c "dm.exe" -c "exit"

Hope this is helpful. I spent a couple frustrated hours the other day with this, but all works fine now....
