I have tried alot of p2p programs, but only 1 of them has standard servers in them.
With the rest of them i need to manually add them, but how do i know which servers to add?

Thx in advance,

RickDB

PS:Kinda a n00b question but i really need a working p2p program because limewire is too limited and wine kazaa is really slow.

Maybe a little bit off topic, but for filesharing, I recommend gift, at gift.sourceforge.net and giftcurs, to be found at giftcurs.sourceforge.net for the interface.

Good luck with it...

Anton.

Yeah, giFT totally rocks. I think the easiest way to set it up is to 'emerge giftcurs' which'll give you a nice ncurses based front end as well as installing giFt too. One thing to look out for, after running giFt-setup check that the config file (.giFT/gift.conf) has setup = 1. Sometimes it stays at zero and then nothing works. Also you may need to ocasionally delete the nodes file (.giFT/OpenFT) to stay up to date with things.

I have been trying to get it to work but i still am getting could not start search(if i can get it to work i will share over 30 gig btw).
Gift looks cool but the giFT-setup is a little irri, here are my net settings:

ADSl modem ----> Router(192.168.0.1)----->192.168.0.4(me)

Kazaa and limewire sharing connecting and sharing is no problem so it should work?
Oh it now gives an error: Can't connect tot the daemon at 127.0.0.1:1213: connection refused (111)
Any ideas or suggestions?

Edit: i guess something is going wrong here:

DAEMON CONNECTION

Host of the giFT daemon that is listening for interface connections. If
unsure, use the default.

NOTE:
This currently does not support hostname lookup

[127.0.0.1] 195.121.1.66(tried both the router and dns)

Hmm, that's odd since it's not like you're trying to bind to a privaledged port. What happens if you start it as root? Also, giFT will build a list of your shares when you first fire it up and if you have 30Gb's it's gonna take ages (make sure you've made use of hdparm first ;-)) and you should hear the hard drive working overtime. Maybe try just sharing a few files first to see if it's working. You could also do a 'netstat -a' straight away to see if you've connected to any servers.

Ok i only shared a couple of files now and tried giFt-setup as root but it still says that it can't connect :?

Netstat -a says:

rick@Tux rick $ netstat -a
Active Internet connections (servers and established)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp 0 0 *:1024 *:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 *:6000 *:* LISTEN

That hostname lookup faliure seems to be the issue. Two things spring to mind.

1) Can you succesfully do an nslookup (www.cnn.com for example)
2) Is there any firewalling software running on your router that could be blocking certain ports?

You could try running 'watch netstat -a' in a sperate terminal as you start up giFT and see if anything shows up that looks odd.

Hmm this is odd:

Code:

rick@Tux rick $ ping www.planet.nl
PING www.planet.nl (195.121.244.202): 56 octets data
64 octets from 195.121.244.202: icmp_seq=0 ttl=250 time=22.2 ms
64 octets from 195.121.244.202: icmp_seq=1 ttl=250 time=22.9 ms
64 octets from 195.121.244.202: icmp_seq=2 ttl=250 time=21.2 ms
64 octets from 195.121.244.202: icmp_seq=3 ttl=250 time=21.5 ms
64 octets from 195.121.244.202: icmp_seq=4 ttl=250 time=18.8 ms

--- www.planet.nl ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 18.8/21.3/22.9 ms

rick@Tux rick $ ping www.gentoo.org
PING www.gentoo.org (204.126.2.42): 56 octets data

rick@Tux rick $ ping www.cnn.com
PING cnn.com (64.236.24.4): 56 octets data

--- cnn.com ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
rick@Tux rick $

It can search the dns of it but cannot ping cnn.com(i waited 30 sec but still no results from cnn.com or gentoo.org) ??

I will check my router for any port blocking software on.

cnn.com block icmp (ping) requests..

Here's a working gift.conf file. You'll have to change the shares but give it a go and see if it makes any difference.

Code:

# gift.conf

#

# protocol (running default on port 1213).  This protocol is used for GUIs
# to communicate with giFT and could be considered a security risk to allow
# external connections.
#
# The following special keywords are supported:
#
#  ALL       - synonym for 0.0.0.0/0
#  LOCAL     - synonym for 127.0.0.0/8 192.168.0.0/16 172.0.0.0/11 10.0.0.0/8
#
# Bitwidth fields are optional
#
# Default: LOCAL
#
hosts_allow = LOCAL

#
# Colon separated list of protocol plugins to load by default.  If the
# absolute path is omitted, giFT will prepend the configured plugin directory,
# which defaults to /usr/local/lib/giFT in *nix, and /C/Program Files/giFT in
# Windows.
#
# *nix users: use the extension '.so', or whatever is appropriate for your OS.
# Windows users: use the extension '.dll'.
#
# Default: none
#
plugins = libOpenFT.so

Ok i changed it but its keeps saying connection refused :(
I tried to ping 127.0.0.1:

PING 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1): 56 octets data
64 octets from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.1 ms
64 octets from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.0 ms
64 octets from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.0 ms
64 octets from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.0 ms
64 octets from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=0.0 ms

So localhost is ok i guess must be the router, whats kinda strang i needed to enter a gateway in /etc/conf.d/net, maybe it needs my gateway adres to connect(gonna try that now)?

Edit: ok i tried giFT instead of giFTcurs and i saw ALOT of connections:

Heh, giFtcurs is just a front end to giFT. You need to start giFT first, wait for a bit then start giFTcurs.

Sorry, I should have made that clearer. :?
