I know many of us are enamored with Gentoo because it make it incredibly easy to keep up-to-date with the (usually) latest releases of the packages we're interested in. As such, we like to live in the fast lane.
Funny things can happen in the fast lane.
FWIW - I emerged mozilla 1.2.1 just a few days ago. It was working great. Solid, no problems yada yada yada.
Yesterday, I was looking into what I needed to connect to a M$ VPN server (MPPE support in the kernel). Since this is a work reqirement, I decided to compile the patch into the kernel. The patch applied all the hunks successfully.
I then re-compiled the kernel. Mozilla 1.2.1 stopped working. The profile dialog box would appear, clicking on that caused Mozilla itself to come up. Each and every attempt to contact any website caused Mozilla to die.
Today, I re-compiled Mozila 1.2.1, and yes, your guessed it. Mozilla is now working very solidly and reliably.
If you're having problems getting Mozilla 1.2.1 to work reliably, you may want to consider re-compiling your kernel and then re-compiling Moz.
Of course, this is only one experience. YMMV. _________________ People whom think M$ is mediocre, don't know the half of it. |

IMHO, the kernel didn't have nothing to do with it... Then again, I'm just guessing.. _________________ Lego my ego, and I'll lego your knowledge

But what else can I say? I can only report on what I saw happen. I recognize that there has been a lot of changes occuring all over the place lately, so I'm sure I've could have easily missed domething somewhere.
In fact, changes have been happening so fast in so many areas of Gentoo and packages, I've become leery of reporting bugs. I'm trying to duplicate a 'plain as day' bug for the bug-wranglers now. And I can't duplicate it on the very same machine. I even have the original 'cut & paste' output!
[shrug] Whether the crashing of moz after building a new kernel is purely co-incidental or was caused by same, I can't say. It's more probable, IMO, that some interim emerge blew out something moz needed. But I can't recall what that might be.
All I know now is that moz is working again (after I re-compiled it) and I used it to write the previous message as well as this message.
