bash-2.05a# iptables -L
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables
iptables v1.2.7a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
is there a way for me to get the modules and load them without recompiling the kernel
thanx |

i'm not sure if you've even tried compiling the kernel to support iptables, but if you read have, this post might help. |

You don't have to use gentoo-sources to get iptables. Vanilla-sources will work just fine. |

ok, sorry, i didn't really get a grasp on your question earlier. now that i understand, i can hopefully provide some decent pointers to information.
www.netfilter.org is a great place to look for information about iptables, they have tons of information about iptables and setting up firewalls. also, the gentoo documentation here is great text on setting up a firewall.
as for actually compiling the kernel, the masquerading how-to(check section 2.6) is very in depth on the modules needed for iptables. since masquerading is a function of iptables, most of what you need to know will be covered in here. you can just ignore the masquerading stuff and focus on the rest. it was my guiding light when i was setting up my router.
good luck |
