Very strange thing I just noticed. I think it might be why my j2sdk core dumps when it goes to link the vm (the final step of the install). Any idea how to get it to see 512MB of RAM?

I assume that by gentoo you mean the kernel. I would first check the output of dmesg to check how much memory the kernel detected. It should be very near the top of the output. If that says 256MB and you're sure that you have 512MB then you could try adding "mem=512M" to your kernel boot line. If that still doesn't work, try reseating the DIMMs.

Probably tmpfs that 'allocates' half of your ram. You shouldn't worry about this though as I've heard that the tmpfs ramdrive dosn't take up any space unless there's actually data in it.

/mnt/.init.d/ only takes up 2M, max.

/dev/shm is another story.

It only saw 256MB in /proc/meminfo, I ran a memtest86 and it only saw 256MB of good RAM. I rebooted and noticed it only saw 256MB during POST. It looked find when I opened up the case, but I reseated the RAM anyways just in case, and it seems to be working now. And Java compiled correctly for the first time...
