Is there a acpi dockapp that can display both the battery status as well as the temperature reading that acpi provides? Thanks

In one app, not that I know of. But wmacpimon will give you temerature, among other things found in /proc/acpi and wmab will give you battery status (and more). One thing though, both of these apps are based on older ACPI standards. So if you're using the "acpi-sources" available from the portage tree, you're going to need to edit some code so they read the correct files.

I'm pretty sure gkrellm will run in WM and handle what you need. As far as I know, it's the benchmark by what most other monitor progs are checked by. Highly extensible and many many modules to choose from, including temp/fanspeed/battery/voltages... You may want to give it a try.
