Hi
I got G4 gigabit eth with OS 9
Removed the IDE disk with OS9 and put SCSI with Adaptec controller.
Booted from livecd, done all steps in ppc handbook.
Rebooted system .
And my machine does not boot to Gentoo. Stops with 'question mark' flashing.....
I think something went wrong with yaboot ? Am i right ?
My partitions :
/dev/sda1 Partition map
/dev/sda2 NewWorld bootblock
/dev/sda3 Linux swap
/dev/sda4 Linux native
/dev/sda5 Linux native (root partition)
While compiling 2.6.9 kernel I changed options for kernel (changed root=/dev/sda2 to root=/dev/sda5)
My yaboot.conf :
boot=/dev/sda2
device=/pci@2000000/pci-bridge@d/pci9004,81783/@0:
partition=5
root=/dev/sda5
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot
image=/boot/kernel-2.6.9
etc.. |

When do you get the question mark? After seeing yaboot, or don't you get the yaboot screen at all? What happens when you boot into the open firmware boot loader by holding the "option" key? Did you rename your kernel to "kernel-2.6.9" from the default "vmlinux"? Why? |

1. The question mark is just after I rebooted machine
2. I believe mac stops just before yaboot screen.
3. Tried that, but with Ctrl+Option+O+F keys.... (thats what I found googling)
Am I supposed to use only Option key ? (Im macintosh newbie )
4. Yes, I did. That was in the handbook. But I think its not a problem. The name of a kerenl i properly written in /etc/yaboot.conf. And I dont get the yaboot screen
thanks for reply |

iI'm no expert...
But I THINK that boot should be set to /dev/sda5.
Because that's where you're kernel is... the bootblock is where yaboot resides (I beleive). |

The boot= line is correct (should point to the bootstrap partition). Are you sure that the device= is correct too? Try an ofpath on /dev/sda which should return the correct OF path to the device.
The option-booting somebody referred to means to hold Option during bootup. You will be presented with a list of bootable devices including (hopefully) the bootstrap partition. But then the question mark means that no bootable partitions exist, so option-booting will probably lead you nowhere (worth a try though).
To recap, you did install Gentoo on your SCSI so in principle you should be able to boot from it, but I don't really know what you did wrong (the device= line looks as a promising culprit to me but I am not sure). Here is one stupid question: you did run mkofboot to create the bootstrap partition and it went smoothly, right? _________________ Quid latine dictum sit altum videtur |

yes, every step from handbook was done without any problems
device for booting is also correct
As i wrote, the problem was non-mac Adaptec scsi card (pulled off from PC machine)
When I used an IDE disk for boot and / partition gentoo booted finally
Now, I have a little different issue but hope to solve this
thanks ! |
