I'm having troubles with my network card, and can't seem to get it working using the methods that got it working under RH. I know this module is the right one for my card, but even when I got right into the /lib/modules/*/drivers/net directory and did an insmod ne2k-pci.o it doesn't work (it comes up with a whole bunch of unresolved symbol errors). I've also tried compiling that driver directly into the kernel too, but that didn't seem to help my cause. I followed the gentoo installation guide exactly, and I've tried both vanilla and gentoo kernels too. I don't know what I'm doing wrong...any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Does "depmod" instead of "insmod" help? If not, please post which symbols are listed as unresolved.

depmod gives me unresolved symobl errors as well... here is my output for insmod:

ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol pci_register_driver_ R1e536d21
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init_Ref0fc18e
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol ei_close_R2b8d45e1
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrrupt_Rb93d8fa5
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol pci_enable_device_R1bc741d2
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol unregister_netdev_R064229d8
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol pci_unregister_driver_Re8061e13
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol register_netdev_R522a22f25
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol ei_open_Rf8d25fef
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol NS8290_init_Rbbd545e3
ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol a16c_ehterdev_Re3857a6e

...and that's all she told. I can't seem to insmod or depmod any of my other modules either without the same unresolved symbol problems, so let's just say that lsmod is looking mighty empty atm. I'm pretty sure I must be doing something tragically wrong when I'm setting up my kernel, which is weird because every kernel I've compiled for other distros has worked. At any rate, thanks for the help so far bro, atleast one other thing has been narrowed down.

Any chance you forgot to mount /boot before copying new kernels to it?

Yeah, I mounted it...Oddly enough, the gentoo kernel is showing less unresolved dependancies than the vanilla one.

Well, I tried her again compiling the driver into the kernel...it works now! I must not of had /boot mounted when I was compiling the driver in earlier or something. Now all I have to do is wait for XFree to compile...isn't this the life?
