hi,
i was wondering, i keep getting tons of emails to my root account, with messages from the cron daemon about

/bin/sh: root: command not found

-- they are typically entitled:

Cron <root@medocity> root test -x /usr/sbin/run-crons &&

any idea on what the cause of this is and how to fix it?

thanks.

well, i was looking, and i found this file in /var/spool/cron/crontabs by the name of root... in looking at this file, it says :

*/15 * * * * root test -x /usr/sbin/run-crons && /usr/sbin/run-crons
0 * * * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.hourly
0 0 * * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.daily
0 0 * * 6 root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.weekly
0 0 1 * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.monthly

these are the same exact error messages i get in the emails... the cron.* files are empty... it says root command not found in the mails i get... any ideas?

thanks,
-ae

OK, I think I might have found the issue. The most current install directions read more clearly that you shouldn't need to run "crontab /etc/crontab" when using vcron. Since I didn't do it on a new installation today, I haven't recieved any errors (I am assuming that vcron pruns the jobs differently). If you are still having the issue, try running "crontab -e" as su/sudo and remove the /etc/crontab job reference.
