Google runs an annual contest for ages 13-17 which runs for 7 weeks following December 1st. Participating students can win prizes for doing small FOSS tasks, including an all-expense paid trip to San Francisco for themselves and a parent for a grand prize awards ceremony.

We (Copyleft Games) have included several ebuild writing tasks this year including several very simple "Intro to Ebuilds" tasks for students just getting started with writing Gentoo ebuilds. If you already have experience with ebuild editing you're already ahead of the curve.

We also have over 100 other tasks, from helping to improve an IRC bot to improving gaming experience on Gnome or KDE, or even design tasks such as drawing icons or designing user interfaces. New task options are always being added based on student interest.

Who reviews those ebuilds? Are they public?

Usually the person offering out the "contract" so to speak will oversee the ebuilds, have a small place for others like you to test and a beta realm where its more public but not flat out public. But at the end of the day things keep changing every year and i think a company can make the offer and do everything internally anyway. So at first, no, then alpha, private beta, public alpha/beta/omgitsdone! Understandably that could of all changed or not. Pretty sure the details of the actual event as such and not the sub events was always clearly posted on the site sections details page.
